The non-smoking laws come into effect in Victoria (Australia) on 1st July 2007. Venues are rushing through planning permits to construct open air smoking areas within their premises with lots completed already. I don't mind a bit of smoke in the room but some of our regular gigs have extremely poor ventilation and you can feel yourself deteriorating throughout the night due to the air quality. Even the smokers complain! It will however open up pubs and clubs to the non-smokers who have been avoiding these type of venues due to the smoke. Smoking was banned in restaurants here a long time ago and more recently in gaming venues. Both seem to be flourishing still as people adjust to new rules and regulations. I wonder how long it will take for the smell of smoke to leave my gear and van.

I put my gear in my van and run a dehumififier in it overnight at least once a year. Gets the dampness and smell out especially the speakers with the felt coverings.

We've got another 3 weeks before the ban comes in here, and as a smoker, I'm dreading it, but rules is rules, and if I have to go outside for my fix then so be it. I do have sympathy with the non smokers.

Wow Geraint, I'm amazed to hear you smoke, after hearing your fab voice so many times. I for one will be happy when the Ban comes in to force in the summer here, I was in a conservative club a few weeks back, and I think every table had cigarette's on the go, plus an idiot right in front of the stage smoking a Cigar, he'd been exiled from the other tables and thought it would be a good idea to sit in front of the stage and blow smoke over us. I don't object to people smoking, I used to myself, I just hate having to inhale it when I'm singing in a club, if they had good extractor fans, and smoking areas I think it would be OK in most places. i,m now off the smokes just over two years i used to smoke a least 80 a day . When i stopped i, did,nt mind people smoking around me but this last few months i can feel my throat drying up and i,m coughing a wee bit more than usual whenever i,m singing so i,m on the side of the ban.. especially for the young up and coming artists who can sing in a healthier climate than most of us ever did

Sorry to disappoint jacqui, but you dont sing as deep as I do by breathing fresh air. I've been for my patches, inhalers, tablets and everything else in readiness for the ban in April, so you never know, I may be a boy soprano by May.

They have the smoking ban in Ireland for a few years now and - although I was against it at first (nanny state-ism and all that) - I think it's a great thing.
Be warned though, you'll find in some places that the stench of cigarette smoke will be replaced by that of flatulence and BO (which was probably always there but you never noticed prior to the smoking ban)!!
