FILTH IN SONGS

We have a saying `you can take a horse to the water but you can`t make it drink` I think that in fairness to all that have contributed to this thread it is impossible to curtail the language of others whether it be in song or in everyday talking This has been an excellent talking point but i`m afraid it has now run it`s course The only comparison left i think is this 1if you watch tv and something comes on you don`t like you are free to turn it off likewise with `filth in songs` if it offends you then don`t listen to it if your out at a gig and the singer is bringing `filth into` his songs tell him or better still vote with your feet and get up and leave

Great point............if you're old enough to know what's happening.

Unfortunately a lot of such language is creeping into daytime telly and is listened to by young, impressionable children who aren't yet old enough to tell the difference.

Songs as played on the radio might seem harmless enough, those with the swear words edited out, that is, but these same songs sound very different when you actually listen to the original CD.

weegeo, I tend to accept what you're saying . I guess I'll do just that- switch off and dont listen !! I cant believe I'm saying this , but I am and I'm so helpless and dejected. I wish I had the physical strength to follow this up, on the streets if I have to, but I cant so I'll just hang my head low and ......go to sleep.

Cubb is perfectly right. No need for dejection. Members should be encouraged to discuss those issues that are close to their heart and where better than in this debate section.

Shyam, I don't see it as necessary to close the thread at this stage, it will no doubt run its course in time but for the moment we'll let it remain as is.

taperboy, you echoed my feeling totally As you rightly said we are not talking about the adults NOW, its the kids, our future generation - they are the ones we need to address . I am not cetain whether its true or not, but someone told me that famous people like Mr. Salman Rushdie and the famous comedian, Mr.Bean have come out strongly against people trying to obstruct the transformation happening now in the English language. It seems they want to let this transformation happen and permit such language and filth as a part of natural evolution . I wonder if anyone has heard this.

ok, first post on this subject: IMHO, i feel that use of profane/vulgar lyrics in songs are an artist means to exploit the first amendment: Freedom Of Speech. ALTHOUGH, i do disagree that there can be times where i have looked at the charts and seen 90% of the top 20 of the week taken up by vulgarity.

I think the simple solution, as it always has been, is good ol' parental censorship, putting a belt on ur kids jeans and using the good old "you're going out in that" line.

we live in an age where we can not even chastise our own children EG: ground your kid, they're ringing Childline etc.

Here's a few tips that as a parent, i hope to pass on to my daughter in years to come:

NO child under 16 should have a mobile phone:
Curfew for over 16's 10PM, NO exceptions
Meet your children's friends, and ensure you can trust your child to hang around them.
Sit down and ask your child their interpretation of the lyrics they are hearing, and make them aware of their TRUE meaning (Education is the way forward)
Apply censorship to their music, i mean i once heard a 4 year old going around singing Kelis' "Milkshake" song.

Paul, that was very good advice and good constructve comments. I wholeheatedly agree on restricting the use of mobiles by kids under sixteen. As you very rightly pointed out, it is upto the parents to lay down the rules and guide their kids and I really do feel we need to create an awareness that this is NEEDED NOW !!!

Please Pat, dont be harsh. Some of us display our sentiments more strongly than others, but as long as its not hurtful or offensive, I feel we should close our eyes to some of these irritants. taperboy is a nice guy with good intentions - I'm sure he deserves to stay on.
