After reading Bigdawg(Ted)'s intoduction and how seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show sparked his interest into being a musician got me wondering what got the other members of the forum into music?
I think The Beatles had a big influence on most of the late 40's plus age group.
For me it was actually Tommy Steele! I saw the Tommy Steele story (aka Rock Around The World), must have been around 1963, on the TV and that was the moment for me, told me mum I want a guitar for christmas. And then months later The Beatles were all over the place, how could you not want to be a musician?!!!!

When there were only 4 channels on tv in the early 70's. I used to watch all the old musicals on BBC2 Al Jolson was a huge inspiration.Elvis movies The Beatles movies .I just loved it all. I eventually did Black up for a Jolson routine for a charity show in 85 and my best friend didn't recognize me. That was before political coorectness came in. You cant black up anymore. I have also done an Elvis concert which was great fun.If i am not playing it I am listening to it.

Apart from wanting to be a 'Pop Star' like every other 10yo boy I took my first real interest in music when our Grade 5 teacher would bring his guitar to school and we'd sing songs for about an hour every morning. That combined with an Australian music show called 'Countdown' got me started in the industry. By 13yo I was playing in a band and at 15yo did my first pub gig. Worked at least 1 gig a week through to about 21yo when I was doing a regular 4 nights per week. I then quit my job and became a full-time entertainer. I haven't looked back since.
I did learn something at school................MUSIC.

Listening to Radio Luxemburg when I was a kid was the biggest influence on my life. Got a second hand guitar and learned Apache , Peter Gunn, and the chords for Oh Boy. I started as a roadie in the Uk late 60s. Went busking around Europe with a couple of guys from the band. Came to N.Z in the 70s heard the neighbours having a jam session and sat in on that Formed a band with them and after the usual changes and sqabbles had a completely different line up in 3 years. Transfered with my job to a different part of NZ. and hung my guitar up {for 6 weeks} Filled in on a few gigs for a local band, stole the vocalist drummer and bass player found a keyboards player. Over the last 15 years gradually changed with technology and now in a duo. Every year I'm gonna retire. So I guess I'll see what happens when I go to Australia.

I started my interest in music in the dark old days of bush transistor radio`s i`m sure someone will remember them small green with a leatherette carrying case listening to radio luxembourg beneath the bed covers lol wat a memory that is My first time playing was in the very early sixties pre Beatles nearly we started a little skiffle band and also played a little jazz albeit badly but over the years i progressed and played in a few good bands mostly R&B but not the R&B of today we would sometimes do 2 gigs a night and i was bringing home more money than my father was the fee then would have been around 12/14 pounds a week for maybe 3 gigs but it wasn`t the money then it was the fun of it all main influence is a wee fat man that i played with for 4 months Ivan Morrison he was odd then and nothing has changed lol lol nowdays i play almost anything and i am quite comfortable in the 3pce band i have we do 3/4 nights a week and i find it keeps me young i`m 57 now lol

My parents bought me an old acoustic guitar when I was 4 years old. Didn't have a clue ! They would often buy 45rpm (anyone remember them ?) and i would sit in front of a huge gramophone (mono, but with a lovely action) !!! for hours listening to John Leyton, Helen Shapiro, The Shirelles. At the age of 8, they bought me my first record player and a collection of singles, Beatles, Billy j Kramer, Gerry & pacemakers, all big names at the time, and that was it. Never came out of my bedroom till I was about 16. I bought a Hofner V2 (still have albeit in bits) joined a band and have been doing it ever since. Now at the age of 51, I have often thought about giving up this music biz thing, but " If it ain't broke, don't fix it" always wins, but I think trying to get any of my gear around with a bus pass may just about swing it ! So I still have around 14 years left to boogie. Merry Chrimbo boys and girls. Regards, Lennon.

When I was about 15, a school mate gave me the loan of a couple of AC/DC albums, insisted I listen to them. Fell in love with Angus Young's style of play and it made pick up the guitar pretty soon after.

My father started the second pro recording studio in Iowa, USA, in the 50's. His first studio was the entire basement of our house ("When I'm recording, I don't want you guys walking around up here!") and his first real income was recording radio commercials with background female vocals for Better Homes & Garden, Kent Feeds and the like. The first studio in Iowa was Ace Recording and he used to send my father the work he didn't want.
When rock & roll took off, Ace refused to have anything to do with it, so he sent any and all prospective rock stars to my father's studio. Listening to Ray Brennan, The Prophets and The Harmonicats (anyone remember them - they hit it big for a while) was enough to get me very interested. I got my first guitar in 1963 and have been playing and singing ever since. My first several bands were able to record in dad's studio for free and he even cut some acetates for us.
Anyone remember acetate masters cut on big disc recorders? If you do, you're likely as old as I am.

Hiya CR A little older, actually. Yep, I remember acetates. Way back when, my (then) band and myself recorded a thing called "Saturday Nite at the Duckpond." It was a really duff version of Swan Lake, but a bit more souped up. BTW, I don't mean WE were the band that recorded it - it was just a cover version that we did, and as I say, it was really bad. But, hey, we WERE just starting out on the poad to FAME AND FORTUNE? ? As I recall, you had to handle acetates with kid gloves. We played ours 4 or 5 times and it was knackered...scratched to glory. Yep, I remember acetates. Regards Bri

My dad bought me an EKO acoustic guitar for the Christmas of 1963 - Took some lessons and then the Beatles, Stones came on the scene and I got in to being a Pop Star!! Started a Rock'n'Roll band in 1971 and played as resident Band at a seedy club in Portsmouth and got to know the likes Of Shakin' Stevens, Graham and Shane Fenton (Alvin Stardust) who were doing the gig circuits...... never put the guitar down since.
