Lately I have not been recognizing some of the songs and Artists on the request section. I try to keep up and listen to my teenagers music. I love Rogue Traders (Ausie Band) and Greenday and Eminem although I never sing their songs. Just thought I,d mention it.
Regards
Mark

I think we are all getting old mark. The public are getting younger. The songs are getting stranger. The beer is getting weaker. And the gear is getting heavier...... But we have to keep up with the times, how many times did you hear your mom say, "This song is a load of rubbish and you can't understand what they are sining"? Well my mom used to say that, back in the 60's & 70's.... Now we say it to our kids..... in the 90's & 2000's. Some things NEVER change....

My band played a gig on Friday 1st Sept, that a few years ago wouldn't have posed much of a problem even though to get to the stage, there were 18 steps on an outside fire escape. We were almost dead before we even started to play. The gig itself was brilliant, but the thought of getting the gear back out and into the van was VERY depressing ! The ents sec said he wanted to book us for future dates, so to try and get out of it, we raised the price by £100, (seemed like a good idea at the time). Guess what ? It backfired on us when he immediately said OK, deal. Any one out there wanna be a roadie for a night ? Them21, ziggy , mark and everyone else is right, we are getting old, oh! and the gear is getting heavier. Regards to all Lennon

Ahhhh - This aging bit is what life's all about - I feel like an 18 year old..... but my wife says I can't have one........ so I stick with doing the music I've done all my life and playing it to the crowds (yep both of them) that specialise in the 50's music. I did do 'middle of the road' music in a trio during the 70's and it was the Rock'n'Roll that got them up dancing!! Still do some of the later stuff in my room and when I'm seconded in to a local band, but I play for ME now!! Reminds me - I'll heve to get me a new wig cos this original one has got a hole in it!! Rockabilly

I'm playing a gig on 7th October and have been told that the theme is Old Time Music Hall, so I'm having to look out all the real oldies - Strolling, Underneath the Arches etc etc. Although I wasn't around at the time these were "hits", I do know them quite well.........frightening isn't it?

I think we all feel the same nowadays, but it's all worth it once you're up there strutting your stuff, even if you are aching after lugging your kit around.
Fortunately, I find that even the youngsters prefer the 60s & 70s music so I haven't resorted to rapping yet.
I think I must be getting old though because the other day as I was walking down the road, a Hearse stopped and asked if I wanted a lift.

Speaking of a hearse; a band local to me has been lugging their gear around in an old late '60 model hearse for years In relation to upstairs gigs I have finally learned to charge a little more to cover a roadie for the night. It does make a difference to your performance and at 42 I'm still working 3 or 4 nights a week so my energy levels are normally down by Sunday nights gig. Am I getting old? Well YES but I am enjoying the fact that all the 'youngies' love the 80's stuff. I learned those songs when they were new and I'm still playing them. Definition of deflated ego.....pretty 20yo girl approaches with a smile and says "My mum used to see you play before I was born". Occasional comeback line....."What's your mum look like? I might be your dad" ;D

Boy, reading all this makes me feel young, I'm only 53 and so is rock n roll. I started out playing at old folks homes and veterans hospitals, that's how I got the good gigs, so it doesn't bother me to play there now. I am glad of one thing the Eagles Lodge is ground floor instead of the two story building that use to be. A few things to remember to compare young and old, now you stay in tune better, you know more chords, if someone has a request for an oldie you know it, young girls still flash me while on stage, you don't have to play disco songs anymore, if your voice is dropping in pitch you're right in style with todays rock, you can still do Elvis songs, and young musicians go crazy over your vintage equipment.

A post by Smurf on the Kristal forum. Hope he doesn't mind (i.e. find out) but it seems very apt.
YOU KNOW YOU'RE TOO OLD TO GIG WHEN:
It becomes more important to find a place onstage for your box fan, than your amp.
You refuse to play out of tune.
Your gig clothes make you look like George Burns out for a round of golf.
Your fans have left by 10:30 p.m.
All you want from groupies is a foot massage.
Your aftershow party is at the International House of Pancakes.
You love taking the elevator because you can sing along to most of your playlist.
You hire band members for their values instead of their talent.
Instead of a fifth member, your band wants to spring for a roadie.
You've lost the directions to the gig.
You need your glasses to see your amp settings.
You've thrown out your back jumping off the stage.
You're thrilled to have New Year's Eve off.
The waitress is your daughter.
You stop the set because your bottle of Ibuprofen fell behind the speakers.
Most of your crowd just sways in their seats.
You find your drink tokens from last month's gig in your instrument case.
You refuse to play without earplugs.
You ask the club owner if you can start at 8:30 p.m. instead of 9:30 p.m.
You check the TV schedule before booking a gig.
Your gig stool has a back.
You're related to at least one other member of the band.
You need a nap before the gig.
You don't let anyone "sit in."
After the third set, you bug the club owner to let you quit early.
During the breaks, you now go to your van to ... lie down.
You prefer a music stand with a light.
You don't recover until Tuesday afternoon.
You can't operate without a set list.
You have a contract.
You say you double on bass.
Amen...Bri

I'm 53 also, and nobody will EVER convince me that RAP should be catagoized as music. It is nothing but insightful hate lyrics. Yes, I use a music stand with a light because I know quite a few songs, and I don't want to have to worry about memorizing anymore. People that come to hear me play music, like my song selection because it makes them reminisce. It makes them remember good times and good places and they feel good about that. Yea, it's the past, but so what. People just have to face the fact that the best pop music was made in the 50, 60s,& 70s period.
