All the new Sony mini-discs, now have what they call HD-MD. This will give greater capacity to a standard mini-disc. You can get up to 679 songs on one mini-disc, but the drawback is - the disc that is HD-MD, will NOT play on a Sony mini-disc player if it does not have HD-MD capabilities.
You can still record in standard MD and LP-MD though....

Thanks guy's.... what aboutplayback features...this is the big concern for me. for example.... I use a program called Virtual Juke Box that comes with CW 9 . I can make set lists and songs will play and when the song ends the next song loads...very very quickly and the n is ready to play at the touch of a key. I can list all my songs and if I wanna skip around I just use the up and down arrow on the key board to get to waht ever song i want and back again. Now I don't expect this from the MINI but.... what can I expect from it as far as playback convienence?... UPDATE I see there is a Minidisc Post maybe this post should be put in the general section.... I see some of my questions are being answered there!!

the minidisk has a display when you record your track name it to what you want it dosnt show all the tracks in one go like a playlist but theres a jog wheel just turn it and itll go to the next track which will show in the displayyou can easy go from say terack 2 to track 9 by just turning it like a volume control u can go backwards or forwards in a second if you have a list of tracks in order and you dont like it laters you can move them about you can join 2 tracks together you can split 1 song into 2 you can delete a track and record another the hd-md glen is on about you can only get them in walkmans there is 1 company think from japan that has done a standard size that does the hd-md there was a link on here best person to ask about that is franky think he put the link on

Tascam do minidiscs in a rackmount form, thats what i use,if your taking somthing on the road then make sure its built for the road. Check the net, look for Tascam MD350,you'l get all the info and pics there. Good luck!

You will also need to make sure it has the 'Auto Pause' feature. It's a huge bonus for live performance. I'm also not convinced buying a second-hand MD is a good idea because they may need a new lens if they haven't been kept clean. (Obviously I'd recommend a lens cleaning disc too) A full disc will take about 10 secs to read then each song will be ready to play within a second or two. The order of the songs on that disc can easily be moved around to accommodate set order. Mine are both Sony Recorders but must check Tascam rack-mount as mentioned by gooney.
Good luck with it all.

Hi there, I have used several Mindisc Player/recorders over the years, But by far the best I have used and still do is the Sony minidisc deck MDS-JE480 I purchased a new one from our Sony Center for £90 and one of Ebay as a back up in mint condition for £40 These machines Will do everything you want including a fantastic editing mode. also there is no delays between tracks unless you want one. All this and it won't break the bank..........Pete.

Hi Ironbaden, Sony only make two stand alone Mindisc Player/recorders, MDS-JE480 and the MDS-JE780, both have EP and LP for recording, recording in normal mode mono you can get up to 50 numbers on a 80 minute disc. With the 780 you can use an external keyboard to type in your titles and also has other good features. With both you can rearrange your numbers at any time for different gigs
