Hi All I am relatively new to midi sequencing and I'm having a problem producing a realistic sounding timpani roll, which doesn't sound like machine gun fire!!. Does anyone have any suggestions or better still a midi sample?

Hi arman I've been trying to knock up some sort of a roll. If you want to message me and give me your email address I'll send you the midifile I've created, to see what you think of it. Does it sound like a drum roll or a machine gun? I don't know, but my good lady says SHE thinks it sounds like a drum roll Regards Bri

Hi Levi
Thanks for your efforts, but I couldn't get anything from the midi file either. The snare drum roll on the mp3 was ok, but that doesn't really help with the midi situation. A timpani roll I guess would be somewhat slower than the snare roll. Might have to make some adjustments in the sequencer.
Bri have emailed you.

Thanks Glenn. Only had chance to listen to it on my Pc at work. Can't wait to try it on my Tyros when I get home!

Not being a drummer but having dissected several good- and bad-sounding drum rolls, I find the trick to convincing sound is to simulate the irregularities of a real drummer. Left and right hands will likely be slightly different in volume (i.e. velocity) and there will be a hint of randomess in the timing of the strikes.
A long timpani roll will also swell and fade. Do this by varying the attack velocity, not the volume control. This takes a good bit of detail work with a MIDI editor but you can get some pretty convincing results.

Well I'll confess. I am flat too lazy to resequence a drum roll, cymbal roll and a few other things every time I want one so, I have a few files that I 'steal' from. I go copy what I want then if need be, edit it to fit in with what I'm sequencing.
Also, how a drum roll, or any other roll, is sequenced will depend on the tempo of the file. A roll sequenced for a file that runs 50 BPM is not going to work for a file sequenced at 150 BPM, which is why I have a few files to 'steal' from. Cat >^..^<

Hi Guys and Gals
Thanks to all of you for your advice and samples, I think I've got the general idea now and something to work with!
