Hi all, One of the forum members asked me to edit a file. Turns out it is an XG file and I don't have an XG synth. If anyone knows of an XG softsynth that works on the order that the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas does, that's what I need. It has to be a driver that my sequencer will be able to use. It can't be a sound font or VST, DXI. Hope you can help. I searched the web but seems all the links for XG soft synths are dead. If anyone's willing to share one with me, I'd be appreciative. Hi Cat
I've been working with Cakewalk 9 which plays, edits and saves XG files. Had no probs. I'm sure you can pick up a freeware copy on the net. If you can't I can send you by snail mail.

What I dont have is XG sounds.
I have Sonar and Cakewalk 9 and many other sequencing programs that I don't know how to use. I do my editing and sequencing in Voyetra Record Producer Deluxe. It does not support sound fonts or DXIs or VSTs.
I need an XG softsynth,....... similar to the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas that has GS sounds. I need a stand alone soft synth like it, but with XG sounds (patches). Cat >^..^<

Yep Sorry, I see what you need now.
The Yamaha S-YXG50 Soft Synth has been discontinued. There are some links for downloads but most seem to be broken or went 404.Will keep browsing. PS check with ToneDeff, he seems to have some input to all things XG, including a Users Club.

I had put out the word on a couple of the yahoo groups I own as well and I got lucky. I now have 2 XG synths. One that works on XP and one that I already have installed on 98. Not sure if it's going to help but I sure will run to ToneDeff to see if he can help straighten me out a couple things on this file. I'm completely XG illiterate. Thanks! Cat >^..^<

XG is only done by yamaha and basically it means it has more than your normal 127 gm midi voices. IE there are 8 bass guitar sounds but XG will have more if you scan thru the banks so if you have a midifile and xg and you want to change an instrument you dont like on the normal gm sounds just scan the xg banks. sound studio pro is quite good at that. But if a midi is done in XG and you dont have anything to run XG your file should play the default patches in GM hope i explained this ok.

Yes I do know all of that about XG. Actually this file probably wasn't true XG format. I believe it was a file produced by a Yamaha PSR (unknown model number) keyboard. I'm assuming that because a friend of mine sequences with a PSR 3000 and his files are very much like this one was. The one thing I've learned is that Yamaha PSRs are very propriatory and rely heavily on SysEx. One of the problems I had with the file I was asked to edit was not being able to edit a second percussion track. It was on ch 9 and not sounding as percussion for me. I did get an XG softsynth from someone. Unfortunately ch 9 still did not sound as percussion. I simply have a long way to go in learning beyond GM. Yep, I'm stuck in a GM world. LOL! Cat >^..^<
