Hi everybody: I am not very technically minded, I'm basically a gigging vocalist, and use midi files through a Yamaha Keyboard as backing. I find that I have to transpose nearly every song on the keyboard before I sing it, which obviously breaks continuity. Is there any (simple) programme I can use to save the key change of the file prior to putting it on the floppy.
Thanks Geraint

Hi Geraint. Funny, but since watching the recent Ashes series I keep seeing this name. I had the exact same problem a while back as you and find the absolute easiest way to deal with this is use a free programme available on the net called ANVIL. There is a link for it on the main site, in the download section but to make life even easier for you here's the link to the download page, you'll need to scroll down near to the bottom: www.midimart.net/pages/downloads.html

Falcon That is brilliant. I'll probably be transposing songs for the next few weeks. Thanks for your help, hope it makes my performances better. Glad you recognised the name. Thanks again Geraint

Geriant The Anvil product is certainly a good one and will do all you are looking for but please remember that it is a free product and may not ALWAY give the desired results. Some have reported that occasionally the drum sound can change, not always, but sometimes. It might be a good idea to save the file you're working on as, for example: #2 just in case. If I may suggest another piece of software - well worth trying - and that is GNMIDI. This is what I use. It is not free but you do get 5 whole days to try it out. If you like it, and wish to keep it, it will cost just €25.00 (£18.00). It has, as far as I recall, many more features than Anvil. The link is: www.gnmidi.com/

Thanks Patrick, I'll get that as well. Finding this site and joining this forum is the best thing I've done for ages, you talk to alleged computer whizkids, and when it gets to Midi, they dont know what your talking about. Cheers Geraint

I have the gnmidi software and I will admit it is a cool tool. You can even make medleys of your fav files. This is great for gigging so you can have files running directly after another, so there no long pauses between sets of songs. Especially useful for rock and roll sets. There's nothing worse than when you do a great lively track and when it finishes the crowd who were dancing is still waiting for the next one.

Patrick and Hex Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the GNMIDI and you are absolutely correct the quality is excellent. In fact so much so that I've already ordered the full programme. You were right abour the drums on the Anvil programme, some sounded like a herd of cows had infiltrated my amps. Thanks Geraint

Delighted to be of assistance. Anvil is fine for those who don't gig or aren't pushed about the overall finished product. Gnmidi, on the other hand, was set up specifically for those of us who prefer the more professional approach.

Personally, I use Voyetra Digital Orchestrator Pro, and Voyetra Record Producer MIDI for almost everything. These are powerful programs and will do anything you need done, MIDI wise. If anyone has any file problems that they can't solve, I am willing to look at them and see if I can solve the problem for you. Things like files stopping, pitche bends being off, volumes not mixed, no play files ect.. I'm also willing to help you edit files for your gigs. BTW, I don't ask anything in return except maybe for some MIDI files I may not have as of yet. Wirte to oneqtcat-at-juno.com (change the word '-at-' to an @ . Keeps bots from grabbing my addy and sending me even MORE spam! ) You will have to write to me as I don't frequent the boards often due to time constraints. Cat >^..^<

Some great advice there, jazzcat. Very generous of you to offer assistance with problematic midis, also
This is the beautiful thing about having a forum such as this - coming across decent folk, who genuinely want to be of service to their fellow man/woman.
Thanks Jazzcat and welcome to the forum.

No thanks needed. I enjoy finding what's problematic in a file and fixing it. Oh and the reason the drums are screwing up when you change the key of a file is because you are also transposing the drums!!! This means the sound that one was a snare drum will be a different sound, the sound that once was your closed hi hat is now something else. When you transpose a MIDI file transpose all tracks EXCEPT the drum track! Cat >^..^<

Cheers Pal. I have a Okyweb which changes the keys and can also change the temp without any dragging but I have just read your message and have downloaded the GNMIDI. I am going to give that a try as well.
I am a gigging artist, and have just recorded a CD in the studios. How do I upload it so that the forum friends may hear it. Any suggestions in simple language would be appreciated as I am not a computer wizzer or anything like that. I get by. Jay Jay

If you read "Members Stage" then "Please read this first" it will give you all the details you need. Secondly read "How To" and select "How to create a link on the forum". Hope this helps. If not email me at glenn@midimart.net and I will try to explain more.
