Hi Everyone I'm sure many of us loathe or atleast dislike some musical instruments. It would be interesting to know your "hates' and the resons for feeling so. I personally dislike the violin and except for a very few songs like "The Devil Came down from Georgia", and a few pieces from Vanessa Mae I think I get irritated within, when I hear someone play classical vioin.. Call it a fiddle and I might not be so arrogant in my views. Yes, I did hear a few learning to play the violin and believe me .. my teeth chattered, my eyes squinted and my ears twitched. Brrrrrr......Grrrrrrrrr !!!

For me it has to be the bagpipes. I appreciate these can produce great sounds, especially when a real good player does songs like - Amazing Grace - but at other time they can sound terrible

You are not gonna like me for this Shyam, ;D i think it's classed as an Indian instrument?...the Sitar...however well played it is it always sounds out of tune to me.

I totally agree with Pat, must be the worst instrument ever invented, I recon it was just a cruel joke.

Yep even tho I'm a Scotsman ,I also only like the bagpipes in short short doses and classical violin I find tedious but I do like certain 'fiddle' tunes if not necessarally the actual instrument itself. As regards the sitar I am fondly partial to that instrument , but for me the biggest instrumental turn-offs have to be the tuba and its close associate the French horn. Regards Bigmike

Hmmm! Interesting topic. Actually I love the violin, when it is played in tune. But how often do we hear that? Children practising at home ... Ouch! School orchestras ... multi ouch! SCREEEEEECH! But doesn't that hold true for so many instruments? The sitar does often sound out of tune to our western ears because the Indian system allows quarter tones. Bagpipes ... my Dad used to say "they sound fine from a distance, the further away the better!" Doesn't it depend upon who is playing and whether you appreciate that musical genre? The clarinet and flute sometimes have the ability to grate on my nerves ie. set my teeth on edge. My 2d worth. JohnG.

I agree with John, surely any instrument is worth a listen, if it's played well. As for the sitar, I love the sound, I'm quite partial to a bit of Indian music. Here's one you can check out for yourselves - a couple of weeks ago I was watching my DVD of the Concert For Bangladesh, organised by George Harrison at the request of Ravi Shankar. Ravi opened proceedings, almost apologetically saying something like, "we know you want to see the rock stars, but please bear with us whilst we play", what followed in the next 2 minutes received rapturous applause, after which Ravi said, "thank you, if you enjoyed the tuning up so much, we hope you will enjoy the music, too"

I don't dislike any instrument, It's the hands (or mouth) of the musician that make them sound either wonderful or horrendous. It's not the instruments fault

The worst instrument has to be a 'China cymbal ' being over used by drummers who think they should be hit once every 2 bars. I think I am safe as I havn't come across too many drummers on the forum.

Oh yea, agreed. And do you remember those terrible electronic disco drums? It seemed at one time that every chart song had to have them in. Dooo, doooo, dododo doo doooo! Yuk! We ought to have an upchuck smiley! JohnG.

I think you may have got xylophone and the Rolf Harris stylophone mixed up, but you have got a major point.
