Oh believe me, I'm wide awake to the mess, and just as unhappy about it as everyone else is. Gads! The world is full of crooks, and I'd say you poor guys across the pond have your share of 'em as well. They just aren't 'in the news' today.
As for butchering the English Language, I'll agree on such utter stupidity such as Bush's inability to say 'nuclear', but won't agree on dialectual and accent (pronounciation) changes that steer away away from British English. After all, had it not been for one teeny vote, on what would be the language spoken in the USA, the world would be speaking German now, not English, in it's many wonderful flavors and delightful textures.
Off Topic, Mike has put up his cal scripting portion of his book up on his site, in case you missed the posting on Chat. He's looking forward to hearing from you as well.

One of my pet hates is "Aluminum" (American) which should be "Aluminium" (English). But i love American people!! I've just got to ask why? What makes us 'different' from other folks? I'm just curious as can be! <grin>

If that's so true, then why is the USA so utterly hated by so many?

jazzcat, this is getting away from the original thread, but still.......... I need to respond. The people of U.S.A. are not hated by anyone and I might say say here, that they are liked by many and maybe envied by many too. Its the Government and its policies and their self righteous role of acting as the World's Policeman, that makes many hate them. Vietnam and recently Iraq are the examples, Why should the Govt. of the U.S.A. think that they know what is right or wrong for the peoples of other far away countries ? Why should they decide whether Communism is bad or whether dictatorship was not required ? We all kno that it was just the selfish personal stakes that some big guys had in the oil fields in Iraq. No destructive weapons were found, yet they moved in . We could talk about these follies for decades to come but it will only prove that the U.S. lost in all their "wars" and the good people of the U.S. lost their precious sons and good will . The U.S. is a Great nation which can stand proud on their own soil, on the strength of its own natural resources and on the steength of the goodness of its own people. It is much too late to regret the follies, but all is not lost and respect can be gained from around the world by standing tall in the pride of your country and winning back friends and love. Though I am angry at your Government (that was), and though I have never been to your great country,I know that your people have a big heart and lot of love to share. We can, maybe now, better late than never, expect to see that love. I guess I'm a dreamer, but aren't we musicians, dreamers Love ya, jazzcat

Having been to the states quite frequently i would agree wholeheartedly that the people you meet in the street are mostly very decent and very helpful to strangers. As for their `past government` it`s the same as the government we have over here just plain greedy but that doesn`t make it bad, just look at the state of most of the African countries and how they are constantly at war with each other but we don`t condemn them half as much as we do the states. Shyam mentions Iraq but what about the village that was completely decimated by `chemical Ali`where was the outcry there and thats just 1 example me personally i think the governments where right to invade Iraq, but i can say that because we live in a democracy. On a much more lighter theme i would be interested to know just exactly what great inventions the Americans have given us lol [we can rule out the following lol space travel, hamburgers, guitars and baseball lol lol] hope cat doesn`t get upset just a light end to Shyams very interesting thoughts. Btw as of yet the scouts haven`t caught sight of the cubb but we are continuing to search lol lol

You have hit the nail squarely on the head Shyam,
The world cannot understand though how Bush got elected for a second term.
What you have said for the USA applies still to the German people especially by the British. The exact converse is true about the German's feeling for the British I have found. It is a mistake though that is commonly made, when a country's leaders do not follow the will of the people and act in a dictatorial way, that the people are tarred with the badness of the leaders. Were all Germans like Hitler? Are all Iranians like their leaders? Were all Iraqis like Saddam Hussein? Are all Palestinians like Hamas? All Russians? All Americans? Of course not! There is no doubt though that in all cases, some are, but often only a few. The problem was, after 911 (or 119 as we have it over here) the great outpouring of hatred (understandable) seemed to be directed towards Saddam Hussein and his regime by most Americans. Of course they had been misled by their leaders as they still are being about the aircraft that crashed into the two towers. They were military aircraft not American Airlines. Watch the footage yourself carefully in slow motion and see if you can see any of the logos that should be there.
Why was there no proper investigation? Why was the tower steel quickly exported abroad for processing? Why did building 9 collapse, that just happened to hold the Enron investigation evidence, and so on. I hope Obama has the courage to open another investigation. Don't take my word though, take a look at the evidence carefully yourself. The American people have been grossly misled again. Look for the enemy within. But why go to war on Iraq when the guilty party was allegedly Al Queda? My own view is that Bin Laden is still on the CIA payroll. My view.
We all have great hopes for Obama, let us just hope he doesn't go the way of the Kennedy's.
We actually truly wish that the American people get the leader they deserve. I led my adult school English class yesterday morning and we covered the election of Obama. You wouldn't believe the positive spontaneous outpourings of hope for America and the world's future that the election of this man has engendered. I was genuinely taken aback. But share in the hope that my participants expressed. My God does he have an uphill battle though.
I spent several occasions in America on business in the past and was met with nothing but welcome and friendship. I found it a delight to work with the people there. My one complaint, like the German people you are too trusting, you expect everybody to speak the truth and to act in an honourable way. Not like perfidious Albion.
Enough John enough. We don't hate you JazzCat, quite the opposite in fact. Just don't always believe your leaders. Even JFK was having an affair with Marilyn, her "suicide" is IMHO still not satisfactory. What about Watergate? Vietnam? Now the 2 towers and the illegal invasion of Iraq. And so it goes on.
But it is only my 2d worth so don't take it too seriously! JohnG.

As is the norm John makes good sense, i`m not sure if i would agree with all of them. Regarding the twin towers and the planes i think that there is some little doubt as to the planes but as for the other plane that went down in the park i think it is generally accepted that it was a passenger flight. I would agree that the good folk of the states do tend to be very trusting and do accept people on face value rather than trust[if that makes sense lol]. The American people tend to follow almost sheep like the words of their politicians until it is just too late. Final thought lol i love America and if i was younger and healthier i would be living there tomorrow i can`t wait to get back this summer.

Hi wee Georgie, Take a close look at the underside of the 2nd aircraft, there is, what looks like, a special radar pod on the undersurface. No commercial aircraft I know carries that pod. It is a long bulge down one side, I think the starboard side. Do your own research and tell me please that I am wrong. I truly hope you can't see what I think I can. I was an apprentice in BAC when I was a lad so have some experience with commercial and military aircraft. I keep telling myself that I can't be right, but each time I look I see the same thing. There are plenty of internet sites with video footage of the twin towers event. I don't want to point you to the sites I know but to let you do your own exploring. I just hope my eyes are playing tricks on me. But this is nothing to do with the English language, is it? JohnG.

Hiya John, Yes your right this is a fairly big curve ball as regarding the English language for sure, though it is interesting enough. My son would agree with you 100% about the aircraft in fact he has a link to a site that seems to show a laser type light reflecting just before the first plane hits. I tend to try and think that not even Bush or the secret service or whoever would stoop to such a low state of depravity and execute it`s own citizens in such a public way, thats why i said there is a doubt but not a certainty. Please pass my very best regards to your good lady wife.

I guess my eyes aren't good enough to see what JohnG pointed out but I can't understand this. If it was a conspiracy and if there were so many photographs and videos to prove it, then why hasn't the truth come out ? It is difficult to believe that the whole nation will turn a blind eye to such a conspiracy, if there was one. No President or Vice President can hide such facts from the public and get away with it, so it does make me wonder if this conspiracy theory is true or not. Most of the photographs and videos are very very hazy and close ups do not reveal anything . If there has been no confrontation worth its name to prove the conspiracy and if there are no legal moves to prove the same, I guess it's unworthy of mention , Many innocent people have died on that fateful day and we can and should just pray for their souls. President Obama, I feel, should just look ahead, be pro-active and not waste time and money to bring out the skeletons in the cupboard. It will serve no purpose and will only drain the brain.

Yes Shyam, it is straying away a bit from the original topic isn't it? I for one do not hate America Jazz....in fact, if we think the world is bad now....it would be ten times worse without the USA's help!! As for stupid conspiracy theories about the Twin Towers....pure and utter Bullsh*t. Conspiracy theories indeed....tut tut .....i am off to meet my two buddies Lord Lucan and Elvis for a drink!! ;D

I'm clearly joining in somewhat after the dust has settled, but don't forget the Canadians - we live on this side of the pond, too! We do like to think we butcher the English language somewhat less than our southern neighbours. After all, we spell more like the Queen than the President - and I'm told we even speak more like her. This last was from someone from Texas; we were discussing how various accents sound to others. (No, the subject of "hospice" never came up.)
Don't get me wrong, Jazzcat or anyone else - some of my dearest friends are Americans. But gosh darn. I gotta tell y'all, they shore talk funny :-)
And yet we can all understand each other and get along.

Just caught up with the tail end of this thread. Shyam stirred massive debate from all quarters, brilliant. But as for the last posts! Jez John I'd be careful of the funny Woodbine mate. This is the real world, with real people and real lifes. Its not Hollywood, JFK is not dating Princess Di and Elvis is definitely not employed as a window cleaner in West Belfast. He's an MLA with the 3 Stooges up in Stormont! It's really just a tad embarrassing.
