Hi everyone, Does anyone out there use a headset microphone in a live situation and if so what models do you find give a nice sound and feel comfortable? I am interested in a wired system rather than a wireless type. I currently use a good old SM58 that has given me grand service for over 10 years, but I am now feeling the urge to move away from the mike stand while singing and playing the guitar. I appreciate any comments/feedback anyone may be able to give.
Thanks Oliver101

Hi Oliver I tried one a few years back,( a Sennheiser i think from memory) Great idea and they really free you up,because ,obviously, you don't have to worry about being in front of the mic all the time,it's always there. The problem i had with it was: When i'm singing high notes i need to come back off the mic as i tend to shout them out and i kinda felt very stifled . In the end i gave up because i couldn't do the high notes comfortably. Hope that makes sense to you,and good luck . Eddie

weeo, that's oh so true. My friend used to use one and though it was convenient not having to be in front of the mic, he had problems singing out loud and in very many situations he would forget to turn the mic off and his asides and wry comments were hardly for comsumption of the audience !! Think thrice before you think of a headset mic, Oliver. Stick to the good old faithful Shure SM58 or promote yourself to use an SM58 Beta. Nothing to touch them !!!

Hi Oliver
I agree with Shyam Stick with your Sm58. There is a skill to using a mike specially if you have a strong voice. Most of the pop stars that use hem have sound engineers adjusting them constantly.
All the best

Hi guys I really appreciate your feedback, and you have all brought up situations that hadn't entered my head, I am now thinking that because of the way I perform it isn't such a good idea afterall. Thank you one and all. Oliver101

Hi Oliver,
I have recently ordered a headset mic from Dolphin Music, Liverpool and am awaiting delivery. The model is AKG C 520 L -- a condenser mic -- and it comes with the AKG B 29 L--a battery-powered powerpack. Cost GBP198. It was recommended by some friends on another forum
Will let you know how it works out in due course.
Regards, Michael

Hi Oliver,
I got the above headset mic and powerpack. Haven't had an opportunity yet to try them in public but have tried them at home and, while they seem fine, I am a wee bit disappointed with the "feel" which is a little different to what I expected and not as good as the "feel" of the dynamic mic I was used to. This is a very preliminary view based on a short initial trial and I expect that I will get more used to the headset mic over an extended time period.
Regards, Michael

Hi modbod I wish you all the best as you get more used to the feel of a headset. My jury is still undecided about the changeover from stand mounted to headset. Please keep me informed of how you get on.
Good luck

Hi there Oliver, Just thought i`d throw my hat into the ring, i used a shure sm10a headset for some years whilst i was drumming and found it ok what the guys say about `high` notes makes sense you can`t pull back and likewise you can`t hold your vocals back either, but with the `newer strain` of headsets you can push your vocals without `popping the pa`The prof:headsets now stop short of your mouth thus allowing you to express your vocals as you would with a `wired` mic, i have a few friends using the new h.sets and infact i tried one myself they are of course considerably more expensive but if this is the road you want to go down it will be worth it. Just a few thoughts.
