As most guitarists might buy pre-assembled sets i.e. D'addario XL's or whatever, I choose to modify those sets with specific string gauges that work for me. The D'addario sets I buy are loaded with .010 thru .046. I replace the first string with .011 and the sixth string with .044. This setup does 2 things for me. First, with a slighty larger first string I get more sustain, truer intonation, and longer life. Secondly, the slighty smaller gauge sixth string allows my sound to be less bassy on the bottom end which helps with richer barre chords. Now, my Ibanez strat is loaded with (2) Dimarzio X2N "power plus" Humbuckers with a five way switch. These pickups are strong and have rich harmonics. I have experimented with different string gauges for a while and my current setup is what works for me. Do you guys use different gauges? Just wondering....
