Hi Charlie you certainly opened a very interesting topic with this one and it has gone on to prove what I like about this forum. The ability to express an opinion, and the ability to have that opinion respected . I've certainly enjoyed reading the various opinions expressed on this posting and gauging the worldwide feeling on the impending Presidential Election Regards Bigmike

Well Charlie Obama has won and I wish him all the very best. He has a big ask and a long tough road ahead, but I would like to believe he can do it. Cheers to the people of the U.S.A. for their belief in Democaracy. A good election, well contested, well fought and the best man WON !!!!!

You are right Ziggy, but to Cameron and his posh Eton cronies? Not my idea of a government for the people. But it's only IMHO. JohnG.

I think the American people deserve great praise for their courage and strength in electing Barack Obama as their first black President and I couldn't agree more. Two things captured the emotions of the moment for me.Firstly the site of Jesse Jackson hidden in a crowd openly weeping tears of joy and secondly as I was driving to work this morning a Scottish mother of African descent phoned into the radio station to say that her small son who has been racially abused at school had woken up this morning with a beaming smile on his face and had told her that he now had hope in his heart . Says it all doesn't it. Well done Barack and the people of America Regards Bigmike

I spent my election day as a poll worker. It was a long, tough day.
Keep in mind that our president doesn't make all the decisions. And thank heaven for that!
As soon a Obama did his first flip-flop in something he stated firmly, I began to doubt him. And soon after that he flat out lied. From that moment I no longer believed a word from him. If you can't stand for your convictions, even when it might make the road ahead a bit bumper, then you no longer have my respect.

All politicians lie, at least this is the case here in Europe. They will do and say whatever is necessary to get elected and personally I have no problem with that for it is what they do once in power that ultimately matters. Time will tell if President-Elect Barack Obama will live up to expectations but one thing is for sure, he could never be as bad as George Bush

Things are becoming crazy here in India, after Obama's win. ,any TV channels are hoding discussions of how we in India require an Obama and many names are being considered. Now, now now this is plain silly and I hope ot'll be just a media air baloon which will bust. Obamis the symbol of change which The people of the U.S.A needed and voted in.Obama is not a saint or a prophet and though we believe he'll be a good man and a reasonable President, we dont need to put a halo around him ! All any country needs is an HONEST head of state and some good honest administrators working under and with him. Looks a simple formula but next to impossible to find. All we can dream of is for a reasonably honest set of such men. In India and I think in many other countries too, we can close our eyes to the corruption, let them eat our taxes and hope that the bribes are put to some use. W shouldnt condem President Bush blindly. Do remember that Iraq's invasion of Kuwait is what prompted the crackdown on Sadam. Kiwait was lucky to have an ally in Bush and many more countries could have gone the Kuwait way if not for the fear of Bush. The U.S.A HAS TO BE A STRONG DEMOCRATIC NATION to keep the world in peace. The U.S. of A cannot be SOFT !!! What it needs is support and consensus from other allies to weild the stick and not act like a self justfied arrogant policeman Obama has a tough job ahead of him

Not sure just how things will go with Obama, i tend to agree with cat i think he blows with the wind, i watched him at his speeches and it was obvious that when he was giving his speech he was fine, but when it came to questions he was rather weak but i suppose everyone needs a chance to prove himself. I hope it works for the American people

Now that the election is over the real work is just beginning. Time will tell if Obama was the right choice. He has a very daunting task ahead of him because he sure made a lot of promises to make changes for the better. Number one on everybody's mind is the state of the US and world economy. It would behoove him (Obama) to begin work solving this problem right away. The American people want action...not more speeches. As the saying goes"It's time to put your money where your mouth is." Although I did not agree whole heartedly with either candidate's policies and proposed changes, I knew I had to vote based on my convictions regardless of who I thought might win. In my opinion, the "real" winners of this election should be the American people as a whole, but that remains to be seen. "We've only just begun" as The Carpenters would have said.
