Two controls that are on your keyboard, I suspect (I don't own one), are "local" on/off and MIDI "clock" on/off. The "local off" control effectively disconnects the PSR keyboard from the sounds that are generated within the PSR. In this mode you will normally be connected to a device (most often a PC) and the software sequencer will have MIDI thru (or echo) switched on. A control you need to set within Sonar. Cakewalk calls this feature "MIDI echo" if you want to search for it in the help file. You'll need both of your MIDI ins and outs connected (or these days probably the ubiquitous USB cable) so that as you play the keyboard, the "note ons and offs etc." that are generated in the PSR are sent, via USB (or PSR MIDI out), to the sequencer program, in your case Sonar, which loops them back out of the "MIDI out" port of the PC (or USB port) to the sound module in the PSR. So doing this, if you set Sonar to record what you play, it will record the MIDI data and you will hear the result . What happens if you leave "local on" in this situation? The PSR will receive at least two note ons and two note offs for every key press. In the worst case it will cause a feedabck situation where note ons cycle endlessly around between the PSR and the PC. Result, strange cacophony of noise! The MIDI clock defines which instrument the PSR or some other device is in charge typically when you're playing back sequences, but using the internal sounds of the keyboard. So the timing should come from the sequencer. So as a general rule it's probably fair to say when you're just playing the PSR (and not PC connected) you should set local on and internal MIDI clock on. When you're working with the PC, in either playback or record, then the opposite is usually the case. There are some exceptions to this though. If you have a mechanism for changing tempo as you play on the keyboard then the tempo changes need to be recorded. In this case the timing information will be generated in the PSR (dunno if you can do this though) and therefore in record mode you need the MIDI clock to come from the PSR. Does that explain it adequately? It seems clear to me but then I wrote it and I know what I meant to say. Is it clear to you? Anyway, hope it helps, JohnG. And hope you enjoy the keyboard too.

Part 2. With regard the GM or XG sounds that can be used via the PSR you need access if you haven't already got it to the "Data List" which can be found at the foot of this page in .pdf format. www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/result.php?div_code=emi and input s900 to the search field. This gives you a list of all the voices in the S700 and how you can program them into a MIDI sequence. It shows three columns (amongst others) of MIDI voice data. So to distinguish between GM voices which just need the last value as "MIDI program change" e.g. 1 for grand piano. You will need to set the other two contollers CC#0 for MSB and CC#32 for LSB then the program (PRG) number. They must be in the right order so it's a good idea to input them while in "list view" with at least one tick between each command. Make sense? Probably not! Please ask for more detail if necessary. JohnG.

Well John and Cat ....finally got sound into my cakewalk prog.........think the prob was my soundcard didnt support midi think so anyway.....well I tried the external .soundcard from my laptop and it works now........so onto my next quest.plz........as Cat rightly said seens though Im using the Sound Canvas the sounds are all over the place so......I downloaded the PRS 900 inst def and loaded them into cakewalk.........so now I need to know how to assign the right voices to the song I record into CW from my Yamaha.........I see the tracks between 9 and 16 are used for the chords left side and the melody seems to be on track 1..this was just a music style I played into CW all tracks together...I also downloaded the voices list......so must I now assign a voice to each track .....and how do I find out whats on which track..? also Ive synced up Yamaha as the master so when I hit play CW starts recording.....but I cant seem to get it in time eventhough I have a 1 bar metrenome intro it seems to be out everytime.........so unless I get it right from the onset the whole song will be out of time when I need to edit in the future...........also is there away of transmitting the clock settings as well as the tempo uses the default 100 in CW ..........have to change it manually.......anyway sorry for going on a bit.....but thanx to you both Im getting there slowly .....appreciate all the help and keep up the great work........many thanx ...Barry

Thanks Wee George, Must admit to feeling "real crook" at the mo. A rageing sore throat that I can't seem to shake off. Had it a week now and it's got me feeling very low. But then I understand this virus is currently sweeping the world. So me and a million others. Susanne came home last night with the back of the throat tickle. Oh no! Time for a cuppa. All the best. Don't laugh wee George, It may be your turn next, and believe me this one you don't want to catch. The last time I got hit this hard was back in 2003, but even that didn't have this sore throat. I'm already on the honey but mixed with whisky. Isn't that supposed to be better? Actually not but the alcohol dulls the senses. Hee hee, hic. JohnG
