I bought a DELL laptop in march and about afew days after i bought it just by chance i ended up on a page about Dell mostly slagging them off for the after sales service and tech support Well in my own honest opinion i think they are 100% spot on A week after getting my laptop i had connection troubles to router sometimes it would connect other times it wouldn't. I rang dell up to be honest first person i spoke to sounded a newbie but rang me back so call costs were nil she couldn't solve prob but sez some1 more experience will ring next day at certain time well they did and sorted out the problem by changing my pass key in the router. Other prob i had was the dvd drive didn't seem to burn disks properly till i changed to better media then few day ago i done a data backup of me laptop onto dvd and it was struggling to read it. I got in touch with dell this morning via online chat support, went thru everything with them even told em Ive updated firmware no problem sir we will send you out a brand new drive next working day.If thats not good service well i dunno what is unless Ive just touched lucky both times .So idont believe everything you read

It's great to hear of a good after sales service, too many times we only hear of the bad ones as both can help people make up their minds on which products to buy or which companies have the best or worst service.

I have dealt with Dell in the past and never had any complaints with them either.

Well, last December (I know, it's an eternity ago), I bought a wonderful Dell 17" screen laptop that seemed to have everything I needed (I was looking for a desktop replacement that would also do music). What I found was that Dell's audio driver (for Vista, which it came with) disabled both "stereo mix" (so you can't record what you're hearing on the laptop - and I'm not talking about copyrighted material, I couldn't even record the MIDI rendition to audio) and they disabled "input monitoring" (so you couldn't hear yourself in the headphones when recording from the microphone). For me, that was a showstopper and I ended up returning the unit. I subsequently bought a very nice HP desktop, which I love. I would love to have been able to keep the laptop, but the audio capability of the Dell does not a meet a musician's need. I believe they may have since fixed the stereo mix issue (but it only took about 9 months with many people grumbling on the Dell forum), but I don't think the fixed the input monitoring yet.
And by the way, when I called Dell support, they helped me try to work through the problem as if those features could be enabled, and of course after several hours on the phone, they finally admitted that the Dell driver just wouldn't support it. Anyway, that was my experience with Dell support.
Anyway, I will definitely shop much more carefully the next time I look for a laptop. And hopefully there will be something that meets my needs.

jford i know what you mean my laptop was the same no stereomix and no input monitor these are shipped out like this from manufacures to Dell they do have a updated driver for stereo mix and i also solved the problem of the input monitor this was by going to the folder when the sound driver was ie progfiles sigmatel which is the audio driver and change a couple of things in the ini file then reinstall presto stereo mix and input monitor i know you shouldnt have to do all this but at least theres a work round. i dont know if its is Dell that has these off or the actual makers of the audio drivers which are sigmatel Levi2
