I use a laptop, and VabBasco to play Midis.Recently, I am getting what I can only describe as "Hanging" or "Looping" notes. Its becoming a real pain. Its as if a single note , once played, stays there, over others. The only way to get rid of this seems to be to shut down Vanbasco,and re-start. It dissapears then for a while.
I do not know enough about Midi to resolve this...if there is a way?? Would be very greatful for some guidance.
Regards
Jerry

Hi Jerry, It's most likely either a CC#64 (pedal sustain) event set at 127 with no later event to turn it off , or it's an actual hanging note where the length of the note goes on too long. If it stops when you stop the midi it's most likely the first thing (cc64). If you have a suitable program, you can look in the event list for the offending track or upload it to this thread for a fix (or send it to my email and I'll fix it for you... I'll PM you my email address). If it's just happening randomly ie: not on any particular midi but just whenever, then it's probably midi buffer overload. Let me know which it is and what sound module or soft-synth you're using. Cheers, Dave.

It could also be (often is) a note on with no corresponding note off. If a lot of cut and paste has been used in creating the file, or extensive editing has been done then ons can be "orphaned". Or was it emasculated? Ouch! Eyes watering! JohnG.

"Eyes watering"!!!...Im actually crying. All this sounds simple....when you know how!! This happens randomly..ie..not in any particular Midi...so Im just using a Laptop, loaded with VanBasco player [not very sophisticated I know]. I probably need to go through each file, see if it happens, and then look for the suggested fixes suggested. Many thanks to both of you for replying. If I cant sort it, I will be back to you to help. Jerry

You need to work out which track on which midi file is doing it first. It could be another midi played before that has left controller 64 on.

Hi Jerry,i have had this problem a couple of times myself ,not sure what causes it but because i do my editing on cakewalk i can see the offending track thats the problem (it goes on way after the song has finished) so i simply delete that section by splitting the track where i want the note to end & then delete the part that i don't need,i have found that for some reason its usually a string ensemble section that always seems to do this.I put my backing into mp3s to use at gigs so it never happens once they are in this format,this may not be of any help to you but i thought it was worth a mention,simmo

Again...many thanks to you all. I too use cakewalk, so I will try to isolate the Midis that cause this, and open them with Cakewalk to see if I can fix the offending track.
Fingers crossed!!!....and..yes Simmo.. I also use a Sony Midi player, with Discs, and it never happens there.
Now to work on it.
Jerry

Hi Jerry, I, too, have had the same problem with Vanbasco. That's why I refuse to use it on a gig. I can audition midis at home on Vanbasco and determine what midis I want to play "live", but my main software I use on a gig is Showplay. Never had a problem with sticking notes, crashes, or any other problems associated with running midis with a laptop. Simply, it's the best software I have ever used. There is no confliction if you are using Windows `98. If you are using XP or later van Basco hangs on all Channel aftertouch data. Use Calkwalk to show all Channel Aftertouch,delete the data and the file should be fine.

What version of VB,I am using XP and VB and have never struck this problem,maybe because I close 64 at the end of each file. I had major probles with Cakewalk doing this untill I found 2 files with 64 left open.It was not on the file I was playing but a previouse file. I replayed my playlist and found the culprits. ROCK in the USA was bad for this and The Wanderer {sax solo}

I could be well on my way to purchasing another needed piece of hardware for the bucks they want. Ouch-a-mundo!

Hi I know its not quite the same but I use a Technics 7000 and even tho its brilliant with midi files sometimes I get 'hanging notes' and basically it gets its knickers in a twist!!! I just initialize the whole lot and start from scratch ( it saves turning it off and back on) Hope that helps at least you know you're not the only one it happens to! Regards Midwaysue

Got the same problem now with Sonar.....using XP btw.....not just hanging notes.........but the whole song stalls for a split second.........thought it might be the midi leads ..usb cable etc ....Sonar reinstalled...........Sound Canvas initialised that..........changed souncard .......no dice....and actually it happens in Powertrax as well.....so its not a prog issue....no particular song everysong in fact.......so theres no sustaining notes or anything......any suggestions...driving me nuts can't do any editing at the moment....any help would be greatly appreciated...........Thanx

Some time ago I remember reading something that said for MIDI and XP you needed to give priority to optimize background tasks. You can find it under "control panel" and "system", "advanced", "performance options" in Win2k, no doubt something similar in XP. Not sure if that's going to help. Please let us all know. JohnG
