Last nights gig was a disaster. I do a one-man show, keyboards and sing. Last night (Sunday) I was playing in a pub where the landlord insisted he wanted the big screen telly on as well! The TV was just to the right of me and was showing some rugby match on Sky. Even though the d=sound was on the telly was turned down almost everybody was watching! Ruined the night for me, I can tell you. I needed the money so didn't create a fuss but I tell you it was a drain to play there. I tried everything, did some wonderful Neil Diamond stuff, even some Elvis, but I was wasting my time. The land lord had the cheek to say to me at the end of the gig that I failed to get the crowd going! I couldn't be bothered arguing with him so I just took the money and ran, vowing never to play there again. Anyone else every have similar experiences?

Falcon I'm sure many here can symphatise with what happen as they more than likely have been in similar situations down through the years. I know I have. But at the end of the day, unless you're extremely busy - and can afford to be choosy -, a gigs a gig

Back in the old days we experienced gigs like that. One excuse that seems to work is to say to the barman that leaving the telly on interferes with the band equipment. If this fails just raise the decibels a few notches, this is bound to get their attention

Leo is right. Turn up the volume, you'll enjoy the gig better. One thing we do in these situations, where the punters would rather watch something else, is try out some new stuff. Just like you would at a rehearsal

Why not just set up in front of the big TV or get a radio mike and stand in front of it.
Buy yourself a spot light and aim it at the TV, they cant see it then.
Cause yoursef feedback, that works a treat.
Or scratch your nails down a chalk board. (that gets attention)
Get some fake (large) £20 notes and offer a question, a real hard one for £20 and give them that for the prize.
Or just stop, sit down and get a drink....... Let them watch TV, you still get the dosh.....

I syypathise with Falcon I play on Sunday Afternoons, but with prem football on sky it has created an audience so the landlords want to keep the crowd ,nothing else for it but to bite the bullet and get the money or wait until the match or event is over.

I agree totally. Sometimes you just have to bite that bullet real tight. Playing it cool always works for me.
