Hi I've recently joined MidiMart and I live on the Isle of Wight. I haven't got brilliant health so I can only do a limited amount on the keyboard/computer but I love playing keyboard it and seeing what it can do. I'm really interested in how the special effects work and the programming of them-envelopes etc -so if anyone has any pointers on this subject I would be very grateful. Not sure what else you want me to say about myself, got 3 kids- 2 married -I'm a nan to 2 grandchildren another on the way in October so 'me' time is quite limited there as well. Thanks for reading this hopefully haven't bored you too much!

Hi Sue, and a big welcome to the forum. Programming special effects eh! Well, I guess i need to ask exactly what kind of effects you have in mind. Are you talking about things like reverb and chorus and so on, or changing the envelope as in ADSR envelopes, or clever ways of using MIDI to simulate things like echo or phase shifts, or what exactly? Please don't say "all of 'em"! Next if you could give us an idea of what equipment you're using that might help.
If you wan't to post your query in one of the main sections of the forum we'll do what we can to help if we can.
Er, did I say welcome aboard? JohnG.

Hi Sue, and welcome to the forum
You certainly live in a lovely part of the UK ( shame about all those prisons though).
I'm sure you will learn much from our lovely members, who are always so willing to help others.

Hi again MidwaySue, Responding again to your initial post. Hope your health is good enough to at least read this? Re-reading your post, you talk about envelopes and, I'm guessing, that you may be talking about changing the sound of a voice by altering the envelope of the sound (ADSR) or the LFO (AR) or even that of the filters (again ADSR) and it may be that I can help you. But I need to know a bit more about the equipment you're using before I can do that. Let me know. All the best, JohnG.

Hi JohnG Yes I was talking about altering the envelopes ect, Its mainly to do with for example how the sound is created for a helicopter or a gun shot? I've done the usual programming of songs and effects on the instruments ie modulations and de- tuning not completely sure of the terminology. My main keybaord is a Technics 7000- its what I've gotten used to, but I also use some computer programmes. Haven't really delved very deeply into this yet but its something I've always wanted to do, but as I said my healths not brill so can only look at it now and then. Thanks for your kind offer. MidwaySue

Hi JohnG Yes I was talking about altering the envelopes ect, Its mainly to do with for example how the sound is created for a helicopter or a gun shot? Nearly all the sounds in most sound modules, PC cards, Keyboards etc. today are made by taking a sample of the sound and storing it in Read Only Memory (ROM). That doesn't mean though that it can't undergo some editing if, and it's a big IF, the device your using has editing capability. All Yamaha's XG modules have extensive editing capabilities, Roland GS devices do too but not quite as extensive as XG. Hmmm! Not sure whether your Technics device does or not. These samples are often, especially with musical instruments, taken at different frequencies and different ones triggered depending what key you press. This has been taken to the ultimate with say East-West Orchestral libraries (now kept in the PC/Mac on hard disk) where a sample for every note at all sorts of different loudnesses with different microphone positions is held. Leading to sample libraries of tens of Gigabytes in size. If you want to start playing around with such things then the first step is to read the manual and see if things like "attack, decay, sustain and release" can be altered with a MIDI command. Also whether other things like low pass filter, high pass filter, maybe even band pass filter can be changed. What can be done will all depend on what the keyboard is capable of having edited. Let me know, Best regards, JohnG.
