Hi....I want to write a basic lighting track on to an existing midi file to control a pair of NJD Spectre light units using Sonar 5.....so that the lights come on with the music and go off at the end....nothing fancy at this stage just a prog/track to make them light up !....where do I start please?

With a midi implementation chart.Showing controllers for on /off and individual light controlls, and a designated track number.

I suggest old, simple and reliable technology to do what you want. A stomp box on/off switch. I joined a yahoo group called Show_Control trying to find a simple set-up for stage lighting, and these guys don't even know of anything that can do it with MIDI simply. Its not so simple a thing as it apparently combines MIDI and DMX lighting commands. Here's a pdf file on using the two technologies together: www.innovateshowcontrols.com/support/downloads/midi-dmx.pdfa site that sells some stuff related to MIDI lighting: www.konin.pl/darys/ainfo.htmand their light controll hardware: www.konin.pl/darys/aoferta.htmand how their controllers work...meaning the CCs you have to send to do what you want: www.konin.pl/darys/amls.htmCat >^..^<

Thanks for the links JazzCat, interesting reading indeed! My set-up is way less involved (or intelligent!) I take a lighting desk to shows (usb from laptop to sequencer / midi out to light desk)and just control the memory presets (which I guess is essentially what is outlined in the pdf) the advantage without getting too technical for me is if I change my lighting desk memory presets and use the same triggers from the midi file I get a new light show (and it only takes minutes to change the presets on the light desk).
