Hello to all my fellow guitarists!
I've been eyeing the Epiphone Dot (Gibson 335 copy) and want to buy one (only $399 here in US) but I am reluctant because I am afraid that I'll be dissappointed unless I actually play one first. Problem is, trying to find a local music store in my hometown that has the guitar is useless. I would have to travel 3 1/2 hrs to Atlanta before I could actually play one. Has anyone bought a guitar online? And if so, what was your experience? All the reviews I have read about the Dot have been overwhelmingly positive...but there's still that doubt. I have owned a Gibson 335 many years ago and it was such a sweet guitar. I'm wondering if the Dot can live up to my memories of that 335...just a thought. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks!
Charlie

Wow, Ally...that's pretty straight to the point...and I appreciate that. However, after playing both side by side through the same amp in a music store...I would have to say the Gibson 335 did sound and feel better....just not $2442.89 better.....LOL So, I bought it online, saved the tax, free shipping...and it showed up just perfect...well...almost perfect...did have to set the action and intonation after I replaced strings...but all in all...I'm very pleased. Sounds awesome through my Hot Rod Deville...which I bought from the savings by getting the Epiphone Dot 335....LOL!

Hi Charlie, Glad it worked out well for you. The quality of guitars made in china nowadays is fantastic, I recently bought a Squire Vintage Modified Telecaster and it sounds as good (if not better) and plays as well as my old Tele that I bought in the 80's!
Your quite right a Gibson probably will sound & play better but not 8 times the price better!!!!!
Cheers John

It's just not as good as the Gibson. Would *possibly* agree that there's not enough of a difference to justify the cost difference, unless of course, cost is not a factor for you. I've had a few Epiphone (and Squier for that matter) guitars over the years and the qualities just don't compare to the originals I'm afraid.

Yeah Ally, I agree with you that the quality is better with a Gibson and a Fender, but the prices are so inflated I just cant bring myself to pony up that kind of cash, especially when back in the 80's I could easily buy a used Gibson Les Paul for $500 and a used Strat for $350 - $450. In a way, I feel sorry for the young guitarists coming up because Gibsons and Fenders have practically priced themselves out of the market for normal everyday people. Rock stars can easliy afford them, I guess, but the average Joe shelling out over $2000 for a Gibson is simply insane...especially when gigs aren't paying that much better than they did back in the 80's.
