MY question concerns switching from using mini disc backing tracks to some other format that would hold everything in one place. I would like to have all my backing tracks in one place so as not to have to switch discs constantly during a job. One problem I have is all of my sequences were formated for a yamaha QX5FD which I foolishly sold along with the sequences years ago. So I need to transfer my backing tracks from the mini disc to whatever I would use. Can anyone suggest a media format that holds at least 5 to 6 hours of music other than a laptop. For example does anyone thick an older hard disk recorder or IPod could be used.

Well, if my maths is up to scratch, you could transfer them all to high quality mp3 i.e. 256kbps, then as a CD holds about 700 MegaBytes I calculate you could get just about 6 hours of them on one disc. At a lower quality even more. Anyone like to check this?
700MB = 700,000,000 Bytes. x 8 (to give you bits) 5,600,000,000 bits. divide by bit rate (256k = 256,000) to give you seconds recorded = 21,875 seconds. divide by 60 twice to give you hours. 21,875 / 60 /60 = 6.076 hours.
Now there are professional CD /mp3 players out there from Marantz, Denon and Tascam e.g. with a buffer memory and text display for professional playback use. I like the looks of the Denon CD635 or cheaper the 615 or even the Marantz cd5001 pro. Just a thought!
Any use? JohnG.

G'day 860Tombarry, I have just started using a Numark D2 (D squared). It's a Dj player that reads from USB devices. It does playlists and can be set to load the next song and wait or load and play. I haven't got a footswitch worked out yet but it does have fader start ports for a DJ mixer so it can be done I just have to find out what message it requires. Not a cheap solution but I use it for many purposes. I have a 320gig hard drive connected but only about 3500 mp3's so far and no issues with search times or loading files. Just google Numark D2.
