Hello Everyone I hope to be at Melbourne sometime from January 2008 to March 2008 (two months) to visit my daughter who's studying at the La Trobe University. I need to sing somewhere in Melbourne and if there are any of you in Australia, particularly Melbourne, with whom I can join in to sing a few songs (with the duo/trio/band, with or without Midi files) at some good gig, I would be extremely grateful. Just a few songs to make me feel good about singing to an Australian Audience. I promise not to "muck up" and I will not ask for any payment, though I might welcome any tips !! Please mail me if you can do me this big favour. I would be delighted to sing with you guys and it would be a lovely holiday.

Wow! This a great opportunity for those in Australia to get to perform with one of midimart's top performers. Hopefully someone will be able to accommodate you Shyam and preferably a fellow midimartian

Thank you Pat for your kind words. I truly am looking forward to the holiday (my first one abroad!!!) and I am looking forward to sing with some talented guys there and to sing to a good Australian audience. I would love to "belt out" a few of my favourite Tom Jones, Elton John and Elvis Presley songs among others.

Shyam, mate, with your powerful, melodic voice you'll go down a storm with the Australians, who I hear really appreciate good singers. And you my friend are one of the fines I have heard on this forum, and that's saying something as we have many fine singer and performers here.

I wish it was Wales you were coming to Shyam, as nothing would give me greater pleasure than sharing a stage with you.

I am truly overwhelmed !! If it werent't for the fact that my daughter is at Melbourne , I would have flown to the U.K and to Ireland and would have loved tomake music with you wonderful friends. Actually my wife and I did want to visit the U.K. but we can just about afford this trip to Australia and we're just waiting to be with our daughter. Thanks to you too, ironbaden and rogerb - I wish all this could be true. My eyes moisten with your kind invitations and I am , indeed, thankful to have made such loving friends like you. I love you guys !

Hi Shyam, Our Australian members are probably waiting for closer to the time before offering you the chance to perform along with them - they can be very practicable that way so don't be concerned by the lack of response so far As for Ireland, well, you'll have to come our way eventually and when you do the craic will be mighty!

HIi Shyam, you could come and do a set or 3 with my band, but I somehow think that Wondai, Queensland may be a bit far to drive for an evening from Melbourne but you must try to keep the shirt-ripping to a minimum (them country folks is a bit staid (but at least the offer is there Warren ;D

Yep, Shyam, most of us are a bit further North (like 2 or 3 thousand kilometers further!!!). There are quite a few of us in Sydney and surrounds and a bunch in Queensland. That's probably why you haven't been inundated with offers thus far. As a matter of fact, the only member that lives and works in in Melbourne, as far as I know, is Guilty and we haven't seen him on the forum here for a while. I think he moved next door. If you get up to Sydney or Brisbane I'm sure you'll get a few offers. In any event, enjoy your holiday and time in Oz and if you go into performance-withdrawals just get your daughter to take you out to the nearest Open-mic night, there are a few of them running regularly in Melbourne. BTW, didn't your old duo partner, Elvis, move to Melbourne? Cheers, Dave.

Sadly thats true ......all you guys are so far away from Melbourne !! Hey thats a great idea these Open Mic Nights .... sounds good. Can you fill me on on these , Dave ? Do they have bands playing or are they Karaoke bars ? BTW, I saw an interesting site "GO-DIRECT ENTERTAINMENT" where they connect musicians with those that need their services, so I sent in my MP3 and a pic of myself asking them to try me. I havent received any response, but well I tried !

Open Mic Nights aren't karaoke, they're for performing musos; usually singer/guitarists, singer/keys, comedians, instrumentalists, poets etc etc. How they work is; the venue provides the PA, mic and audience, occasionally a guitar or keyboard is available because they have resident players who back singers but you'd have to check with the venue first. Some of the Melbourne nights were going strong a few years ago and a lot of new talent was coming up through them but I haven't had much to do with them. Check out www.openmicaustralia.com.au or just google "open mic melbourne" for anything current. They usually have about10-12 acts doing 2 or 3 songs each over a 2 or 3 hour gig. Early week nights have maybe 50 punters if you're lucky, midweek maybe double. Here's a little review that explains it... "VENUE: The Arthouse When: Monday Nights Where: Elizabeth St, Melboune Time: 8pm-12pm How to sign up: Just show up and put your name down with whoever is running the night, apparently it changes. How long are the sets: 3-4 songs as with most Open mics this can be extended if they are quiet. Stage set up: As with most venues in Melbourne they have an in-house PA. The Arthouse has bands most nights of the week so they are well equiped. The stage has two foldback and the front-of-house is ceiling mounted either side of the stage. The night we were there the guy who did the sound also ran the bar, MC'd, picked up the glasses answered the phone and took names, so don't expect him to be perfecting the mix. If you know someone who can tweak a sound desk then they are fine with that. The Arthouse has a very raw feel, beer soaked stage, dark-room and an eclectic mix of music and spoken word. This venue has seen some music in its time you can feel it in the walls. Bands on later that week had names like 'Fisted by Midnight' and 'Injury to the Eye', classic names!" I'm sure you get the idea. There's one at the Geelong Folk Club that's quite famous for great players. Start searching, and I'm sure you'll find something that'll suit you and your music. Cheers, Dave.

Thank you sooooooo much Dave - I really am excited already and I hope I can get a slot someplace, somewhere. I'll need to ask my friend Elvis (who's already at Melbourne) to join me with his Tyros2. That should be great fun and with him around it'll sound very professional too!! Yeah this is just what I'm looking for. Thanks again Dave.

Change of plans- I've decided to go to Melbourne only by the end of March 2008. If I had landed there in Feb I would have been in the midst of Lent ! Easter and after should be lively in Melbourne so thats when my wife and I will be there. Will call up all my MidiMart'ians' once I reach there.
