Lesson 1 addendum
Some of you, I suspect, may wonder why I've chosen this approach to doing this lesson. Well, the reason is that when you have to try and merge (concatenate) two files, before you can begin the process, you need to check if they are in the same key, tempo, whether two different instruments have been assigned to the same track or channel, whether one file has been written for a GM instrument and the other for GS or XG. Are there setup measures and does one need taking out and the other modifying? If so how? Is there a lead in measure, you know, tick, tick, tick, tick, on both files? Do we want two lots of lead-ins? And so on.
If we just jump blindly in and link the two files together without first examining them and modifying them as needed, we'll end up with a total mess. Almost guaranteed.
So, come on, any takers? JohnG.

Well? Let's see some takers! You guys have a real chance to learn something here. I'm here to tell you that good teachers don't grow on trees and they most often charge a bundle!
With this lesson you are going to be learning a LOT more about editing a file than just slamming 2 files together to make a medley. You are going to learn a lot about what happens in a file and at the end of this lesson you will recognize things in other files you've had that have give you problems. You don't know how valuable this lesson can be to you!

Count me in JohnG........ this is just the kind of thing I was hoping to pick up from the site. I've tried doing similar tasks before, but with varying degrees of success. I find I switch off to easily when trying to read through all the theory first, so tend to jump right in with a trial & error approach.......mainly error ! I understand the requirements around ensuring instruments on the same track are the same etc, and have even managed to get tempo & key changes sorted........ but my problem has always been that when something's not right, I'm flummoxed as to why, and how to put it right. Keen learner ready, willing and (incomtently) able

Yes, Cat, we appreciate how fortunate we are to have someone of John's calibre on the forum.
Thank you for such a terrific job, John. Certainly much there for those who wish to take their level of understanding basic midi editing to a whole other level.

Thanks all for your kind comments. JazzCat, tnt and Pat. So far only one taker! Perhaps it'll end up as a private lesson. Or maybe everyone knows already how to do the editing. JohnG.

Further to my last message, Glenn has very kindly agreed to let me put the two files needed for this lesson in the members' area. This will allow those who do not have Gold Membership to join in if they wish. So if you do, pop over there, download the two zip files and join in. Please let me know too. Very many thanks Glenn.

Hi JohnG I decided to have a go when the challenge was originally posted and have only just got round to finishing it, but this was before you posted the 2 trial files. Therefore, the 2 songs I've linked/adjusted and possibly messed up, are the Fats Domino songs that were suggested, but these were already in my collection and are not the same as those that you posted. Trouble is, where should I upload the finished article for you and maybe others, to have a listen/comment?

Even if there is only one taker it would be nice if the 'lesson' stayed onlist. I haven't had time to participate. Seldom have I had the desire to create a medley. Most times I wind up fixing up someone else's mess when they've done it. Or, I am taking an incomplete section out of a medley and creating a complete single tune from it.. (Just did one for Jacqui that required a great deal of writing and re-sequencing of a really tacky version.) When I have wanted to do a medley, it's been a PITA. So, if the lesson stays online maybe I might pick up a helpful hint or two myself.

Hi JazzCat,
Yep, I planned to do that anyway, but I'm still waiting for feedback from my one participant on the pre-editing phase of the work. i.e. song analysis before starting the cutting, pasting, importing, editing process.

Hi JohnG You said in an earlier post relating to yuor "one participant". I think you'll find that I have sent you a file for consideration. Did you not receive it? Or did you consider it not worthy for inclusion? I'd like to hear your comments, good or bad.
Cheers

Hi there,
Yes, I received it okay, I thought I'd emailed you to say that, so sorry if I didn't, just an oversight I assure you.
To be honest I've not had the time nor ability to look at it yet. We had a heavy fall of snow a couple of weeks back, which I cleared with my neighbours, and in the process hurt my back again. I've not been able to sit at the computer for very long because it's pretty painful. I've had a problem with my back since I was about 14. I think they call it scoliosis. When I do get to sit down I have to do my work first, I'm sure you understand.
I will get around to looking at it as soon as I can, I hope over the Easter break. I'm not ignoring you, nor do I consider anyone's efforts "not worthy", that's not my style. We all have to start somewhere and I remember only too well my own faltering first steps many years ago. If there were problems with it I'd still give you some feedback on how to improve it, if I could.
Remember too please, that I am a free resource and I don't get paid for any of the contributions that I make here, (nor am I asking) but what I do has to be in my own free time. Because I also teach part time to keep the wolf from the door, the preparation of lessons has to come first. I have paying customers.
Hope that clarifies things, Best regards, JohnG.

Hi JohnG, Thanks for the response, I really didn't mean to "hound" you and I'm really sorry about your back. I hope you recover very soon as I know what you're going through.
All the very best

Sorry to all for my lack of posting here. I'm in the throes of writing the article (nearly finished) but other events and the lack of being able to sit at the PC for very long has prevented me from finishing. I hope to be able to post the next part very soon. Best regards, JohnG
