Hi
I'm trying to use my own Avatar in GIF format. I keep putting the URL address in and size (80 x 66 pixels), but no Avatar! What am I doing wrong?

ya gotta make sure the actual size is 80 x 66..it will not convert it on its own..... this is the problem i was having . the gifs themselves were too big and you need a GIF program ( there are some free sites you can do this in ) to change the size of them. Hope this helps

Hi ironbaden That is the actual size. I have had a thought though my avatar is on www.box.net and the URL address does not actually download the avatar it only takes you to the page from where it can be downloaded - could this be the problem - if so how do I overcome it?

maybe try downloading it and uplosding from your PC? I'm not really sure to be honest. what is the size of it say...in megs? maybe this is the issue.,... I know the last time i tried to upload a gif to another forum that was the problem i had... it was 2 meg and i couldn't make it smaller that way... right click and select properties on the gif what's its size in meg's or KB's

If I read this correctly, you should try to go to the page where the avatar is and right click it, and select save image as.., and name the image. If you just use the url and the avatar where they are that is like stealing bandwidth, which slows sites down and the person that owns the web page pays for that. Also if the website is ever changed, your avatar won't work as the url will have changed. Once you have the image downloaded to your computer you should be able to use it anywhere you would like just by uploading the image.

ironbaden, A while back, I posted an offer to help with 'custom' avatars here. If you try to modify an animated gif with a standard graphics editor, you will only modify the 1st frame of the animation, not the entire file. I have resized 'data.gif' to 100x75 pixels. I also optimized it, which reduced the file size from 1588M to 162K. By making the file 90% smaller, the load time is considerably shorter. Below you will find the optimized file & a link to it. Make sure your member profile reflects the new dimensions for the avatar to display correctly. Have a great day, Alan www.geocities.com/foothillssound/images/Data.gif

Hi arman,
1st, check out my reply above to ironbaden.
If you post a reply with a link to the actual location of the file you would like to use as an avatar, I will do everything I can to help.
Cheers, Alan

You're quite welcome, arman. Here is a link to your avatar that works. As mentioned to ironbaden, make sure your member profile reflects the correct dimensions (80x66) for the avatar to display correctly. Below is the image & a new link for it. www.geocities.com/foothillssound/images/mjl2.gif
