Just tried to listen to the file of The Drinking Song that Rosybud posted & came across a problem that I only get on some sites: if I just try to play the file, I just get a blank white window, the only way I can play these files is by saving them first. As I said, this is only on some sites, on other sites I can play the files to "preview" them. This is strange one, probably something in my settings, but I haven't found the cure yet. Any ideas?

Very strange, but also very familiar. What do you use when you would normally play a file directly, without having to download it first, that is? For example, I use Vanbasco. I mention this because I remember having problems like you describe but when I deleted Vanbasco, and then reinstalled it, everything worked the finest again. I Just had to make sure to tick all boxes so it became my default programme for opening midi files. Not saying this could work in your case but it might be wroth a go If it doesn't work for you I am sure others will be able to offer sounder advice.

If you do use vanbasco as your file player.
Check to see if the file you are trying to play has a SySex (all notes off-reset) at the beginning..... This will give the appearance of being a blank file.....
Some file players will only play midi-format 1 or midi-format 0.....
but these faults don't rectify themselves if the file is saved, then played.....

I use cakewalk (V3), which has always worked fine until recently. I'm not sure if it's part of the same problem, but when I was checking out a few different sites last night, I got a message saying that the plug ins had not initialised correctly.

Ziggy, have you tried this with Vanbasco as Glenn suggested? It might help solve the issue. Keep us informed. We love to hear how things turn out

Thanks for the input, guys. Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I had to replace the cmos battery in my computer yesterday. I've got a floppy with Cakewalk on, it's tucked away somewhere "safe" from when I moved house last year. I'll try the uninstall/re-install route & see how that goes. I thought it would be something to do with my IE settings.
