Hi Paul I'm desperate and need your help desperately!!!!!!!!!! 1.The Task bar does not work - it says its been disabled by the Administrator. I AM the ADMINISTRATOR and I havent disabled anything. 2. I cant run "regedit" and my Trojan Horse Remover says its been disabled and they offer to enable it which I accept but only till the next boot up whem it still becomes disabled 3. I have a fiolder called "New Folder" in my USB pen drives and though the scan says its clean, it cannot be opened or deleted. It supposedly contains 591 Kb and is shown as an Application file. I managed to delete it once or twice but it returns when you cross check on it again. 4. The USB pen drive cannot be formatted . just refuses to be formatted. 5. I thought I'd fix everything by inserting my Windows XP hOME CD but it didnt make any difference to any of the problems cited. 6. I decided to format the Local disk "C" drive but it doesnt fiormat. saved all my data etc in different drives and in CDs and I thought I could load the OS again (MS XP HOME), but I cant format the drive . 7. I have no sound . 8.I can access the Net and open documents and images but its all painfully slow. Ihave AVG Frtee Edition, Ad Aware, Spybot and Trojan Remover plus the Windows Firewall. Please advise.

start your windows in safe mode, and see if you can alter things that way.if not put your windows installation disc in and reboot,(assuming you have the cd selected as the first boot in bios)you can then either choose to do a sytem repair or i thinkin youre case carry on to the format bit and do a quick format in ntfs, then install windows again.if there are folders you want to keep on your hard drive, try and get a copy of knoppix, which is a stand alone linux disc.this will load itself into your computer without taling any disc space.when loaded look for your hard drive, open it up and retrieve your programs.this is also a good way of repairing or deleting things,if you know what they are.paul might have another solution for you,or advise you better. good luck steve

sounds like you have a unremovable token on your disk.
the only way around this is a full format of the hard disk. Assuming that you have all your important documents backed up, this will be the quickest and safest root to go.
Steve made a point about using knoppix..... but i feel from previous posts that you have made shyam, you have root level problems with your operating system (Rootkit etc)

Thanks for your advice. Paul. I guess I'll have to do the inevitable.'m just biding time as I still have access to the internet and MidiMart !!! While on the subject , can you please tell me if I can only format my C drive instead of the whole HDD ? i got tons of stuff in my other drives and that'll be tough to back up. If I could format only the C drive and reinstall my Windows XP hOME eDITION , I thinkmy problems should be solved. Your advice p l e a s e .

shyam If you have more thn one partition on yer drive yupp you can do it and keep the other partitions without formatting them. Bearing in mind if you have any progs on the other partition they wont work once you have installed xp back on but if you just have files on like mp3 midis photos etc etc they will be fine. when you put your xp disk in it will recognise you drives . just go thru the procedure ie you want to install xp on c drive do a quick or full format blah blah Also i would do a full virus scan on all drives. not so long ago i got the virut.o trojan and it effected every .exe file wether it was a exe to run a prog or to install and i had to delete every file on my other partitions with a .exe on it then move me pic and midis and done a quick format on the drives just to be 100% sure i had killed it .Its even killed my nod32 virus scanner

delighted to hear it mate:
bear in mind that you could only be remedying an underlying problem my advice is to reinstall XP, and do a full update, better a fresh installation than an iffy system
ticking time bomb etc
