I used Norton for a year and had lots of problems. I have used McAfee since and had no worries at all.

Hi
Another question for our resident P.C. Doctor Paul if that's O.K.
Quite recently My computer was infected with a virus so bad that I had to have a new hard Drive fitted and reloaded Windows XP. The guy also loaded AVG, as it was the only one he recommended. I asked him if it would be possible to leave the old drive in as a slave once it had been scanned with AVG.
Up to the point that my computer had packed in I had been using Norton and had it set on automatic update and thought I was safe. How wrong I was ! On the first scan through on my old drive ( now set as a slave to my new drive) It found hundreds of viruses.
I have obviousley come to the conclusion that Norton ( If you'll pardon the expression), couldn't find a turd in a toilet pan ! let alone viruses.
My question is though, even though I repeatedly scan my old drive and empty the vault and reboot my computer it still finds the same vrus on my old drive on subsiquent rescans.
I'm not bothered about my old drive but it has info, files and programes on it that are more valuable to me than the computer itself.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
Sean

Hi Sean, I use AVG and find it very good. Is the AVG set to remove the infected files? Maybe they're re-appearing because they're not being successfully removed. If you don't need the infected files; delete them, empty the re-cycle bin, turn off the computer (don't just re-boot), turn it back on after 10 seconds or so and see what you've got now. Also, visit AVG's site (Grisoft) and download their free Root-kit removal tool. Run that. Do you know the name(s) of the virus? That'll help with removing them. Cheers, Dave.

also dont forget if you got sys restore switched on your virus mightl be in there its always better to turn off your sys restore when scanning viruses so they dont come back also a lot of ppl do a full scan in safe mode

For me it's been free AVG for many years. It seems rock solid to me too. Before that I used F-prot which is good but not free.
Plus I use Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D (Search and Destroy) for clearing tracking ads and cookies etc.
I also use Spyware Blaster which loads a table of troublesome sites into the prohibited sites area of Explorer or Firefox (think it does Netscape too) it doesn't clear them just stops them loading. These have all been reviewed by various magazines etc. to be top notch utilities without any embedded spyware.
Just my 0£.0s.2d. JohnG.

Not sure if the free of AVG version updates, but, as I said before, it only cost me £23 to buy (2 year licence) & when I renewed I got a 50% discount. £11.50 for 2 years is even better! It does a daily scan of all my files for viruses, & is constantly updated. An excellent piece of kit.

Yep, my AVG free looks for a new update once a day.
