Hi Paul,
I’ve got a problem with a sequencer programme called Evolution Sound Studio Gold v1.19. It always worked OK on Win 98SE but it always takes four attemptes to load it under XP SP2 home.
When I try to load it I get GOLD caused an access violation in ntdll.dll at 0x7c911f52 Click on CLOSE to terminate the application Click on IGNORE to continue, you should save your work in a new file.
I have to click on CLOSE and try again and on the fourth attempt it always loads OK and will continue to load until the system is rebooted.
Unfortunately Evolution seem to have been taken over and there’s no support available. It’s supposed to be suitable for Win 95, 98, ME NT4 & XP and I’ve tried to run it in compatibility mode with the other Win systems but I still get the same problem.
Having to make four attempts to load it is very frustrating !
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
XP Home SP2, Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz. The only hardware connected is a Logitech QuickCam.

hmmmmmmmmmm...................
off the top of my head th only thing i can suggest is try swapping the RAM around
or try installing it on a fresh copy of XP, as sometimes critical updates can play with the dynamic link libraries (.dll)
dirty/scratched media can also be problematic. try copying the contents from CD to the folder on ur desktop and install from there.
if you want to, you could mail me an evaluation copy of this, and i will test it, as it is hard to think in code without seeing the product

Thanks Paul I've mailed you a copy. I've moved the ram around but it did not help and in the meantime a friend has just installed the programme on his Dell laptop (XP) and it's doing the same thing.

UPDATE:.............................
I can not see a problem with the software using it on vista. i also ran it on an XP pro machine W/SP2, worked fine also ran in virtual PC with 95/98/NT/ME/2K and works perfect.
i think it's probably down to a corrupt/updated .dll from microsoft.
only solution would be to possibly re-install XP or dual-boot a copy of 98SE or something

I reinstalled XP but the problem is still there. I mentioned that I had tried running Gold on a friends Dell laptop and got the same problem. I then realised that we both had Roland VSC so I uninstalled this and Gold worked OK. When I reinstalled VSC the problem came back so it must be some incompatibility between Gold and VSC.
I’ve tried running both in Win 98 compatibility mode but it does not help.
I think I just have to live with having to load Gold four times before it works !
Thanks very much for your help.

Have you tried this: make sure that the 2 programs, ie: ESS Gold and VSC, aren't in conflict over which one gets to open/manage files. What I mean is... is VSC set as the default program for mid/midi file-types? If so, try changing the default program for mid/midi to ESSGold. Here's how; open a folder containing midifiles, select Tools > Folder Options > click on File Types tab > scroll down to mid (you should see both mid and midi as file types, do them one at a time) and highlight one and look at which is the default program for opening it. It may be set to VSC (remember VSC is a midi player as well as a sound source) or something else, try setting it to ESSGold as the default program. Do exactly the same with midi (and kar if you open them with the program too) and see if that helps, I'm not 100% sure if this will solve it but it's worth a shot. Let me know how it goes. Cheers, Dave

Problem solved ! I tried changing the default program for file types but this did not cure the problem but then I had a look at the control panel sound settings.
In Sound and Audio Devices Properties the default device for midi was set to Roland VSC. I changed this to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth and unchecked the Only Use Default Devices box.
Sound Studio Gold now loads OK. It’s Output Device is set to the VSC and that is working correctly.
Thanks you all for your help. I can now stop pulling out my hair which is just as well as I don’t have much left !

Yep, that explains it; both the ESS Gold and VSC were trying to "arm-wrestle" with the default device for control of your system! lol... it's amazing how often it's something as simple as that! Very well done on sticking with it until you solved it, persistence overcomes resistance every time.
