Has anyone ever seen or noticed how Barry Gibb plays chords, On certain songs where there is a G chord he strums the guitar with no fingers touching the strings. OK I know thats open G tuning. So when you have an open tuned guitar and you bridge at various frets you get a chord Right, So how comes he uses fingered chords. Can someone explain as I would like to try this.

what pops into my head is this.... if open G is all the strings uncovered...... then covering the second fret would be A.... and moving up accordingly. playing A Minor or C Minor would require using more fingers... 7th , augmented chords ect.... would all require fingering .... ;D... just a thought

Oooo... My Favorite way of playing acoustic! imo, Will Ackerman is the top of the field of those who open tune. Check this page for more information on his style. Tunings PageHe also mentions a book that Patrick Breen has wrote on the subject. Sounds like a good read if your interested in this style of play. Me personally, I tune to open D. Less stress on the neck and easier to finger. Just capo to your key. ;D Jerry

Hi This is the G tuning method used by many Rythmn and Blues and Blues players - one of the most notable is Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones - songs after Honky Tonk women (from memory). Here's a link guitar.about.com/library/bltuningdgdgbd.htm. In keith's biography it took him a couple of months to master the chord variations but it explains why some of their songs are so hard to get the right sound on a conventional E tuning!! I'll leave you to practise!!!!

My husband always uses Start Me Up as a teaching example to demonstrate the technique to his students. This link mentions some of the guitarists associated with open tuning en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_tuning

Hello Everyone I was a guitarist till I went on to the keyboards. I had this carpal tunnel problem and got an operation done with not much relief. Now my fingers are not that sensitive and its tough to feel the strings. Reading this thread, I was just wondering if I could strum a guitar with the open G or D . That will be quite easy and maybe I could get a minor or 7th using one extra finger . Please tell me if this is possible, I'll get myself a nice Jumbo Acoustic Guitar and happily strum away with my PSR 3000 as accompaniment. Il ove the sound of an acoustic guitar and I'm sure it'll sound good and look good too, playing a guitar instead of only having two keyboards on stage. Hey, I'm excited thinking about this. Please guys tell me something positive !!!!!
