I got a 1991 Emu Proteus MPS at the Salvation Army for $15. So, I can't complain that it's not perfect. But, I'm a tinkerer, and I'd like to figure out how to make it work right. It works as a midi keyboard, but: touching the mod wheel sends an endless stream of garbage data, the pitch wheel doesn't send anything, and (most important) the synthesizer is mute. The LCD panel indicates that the electronics are fine. It seems to respond appropriately to commands from the buttons & keys. It remembers my changes, after powering off. But, it just doesn't produce anything, from the audio jacks. There is a slight tick, when I power-up. Nor can I reach the synthesizer thru midi. For example, when I change the preset on the keyboard, it doesn't send a program change to the computer.
I have completely dismantled it and put it back together twice. I first opened it up, to see if anything was unplugged or fried inside. Nothing was. But, it turns out that someone did spill a Coke or Dr Pepper in it. Thanks to Emu's good design, none of it seems to have touched the circuit boards (except for the ones under the keys). So, I rinsed those with water (blew them dry with canned air) and washed the keys & case with soap & water. I ended up doing this twice, because some keys were still sticky. I still have 2 keys, which don't work, and I can live with that. Anyway, other than improved key action, it works exactly the same as before.
I'm stumped. Does anyone out there have a clue, how to fix this? Thanks for any input you may have.
