Hey Jazz Cat,
I have an old Yamaha QY700 sequencer / sound module and the floppy drive has failed. Therefore, I can no longer load files into it, but I can still use it as a sound module. Here's my problem: I changed the file extension from .QY7 to .mid and the file changed to a Vanbasco file (SMF/Karoake player). But when I try to load it into the Jazz Sequencer this messgage appears: Fatal Error....wrong header Dont know what that means, but the Jazz Sequencer will not play it. Since that QY700 file is most likely proprietary to Yamaha, i'm wondering if that file can be converted to .mid. It would so much help if I could convert all those .QY7 files to .MID, play them from my laptop, and have an CD archive of these files. Well, that is my delimma....please help if you can.
Thanks!
Walter

Hi Charlie ! Why You don't change the floppy drive , just make a call to nearest Yamaha service , I think it will not cost a fortune . If there is no Yamaha service You can check in net and find head office from Japan . I'm sure they will try to help You .

When you are dealing with a proprietary format like that you can bet you are stuck. Unless the Yamaha itself has a way to convert to MIDI format it's not going to happen. So, like Lucky said, the only thing you will be able to do is get a hold of Yamaha and hope you can replace the disk drive. Sorry I couldn't help, but unfortunately no one will be able to. I've looked and found that question was asked clear back in 2002 and shows up in may places on the net. There are no replies to the question. Cat >^..^<

Hey, thanks JazzCat... you are exactly right. I was able to convert the proprietary files back to .mid in the machine itself. It is a tedious process as you have to convert one song at a time. You can save as format 0 or format 1. One major disadvantage when you convert back to .mid is that all the changes made to file while it was still proprietary....are lost. So, basically you have to re-edit all files so as to make them sound the way they used to. It's taken me almost 2 weeks to convert these files, but I'm almost done. Oh, and by the way, I did replace the disk drive. It was the only way I could ever retreive the yamaha files and convert them. If you know anyone who is needing to convert QY700 files to midi, then I can step them through it. Thanks!
