Question: Hi Cat, I recently read your post about fixing dodgy midis so I thought I would send you this one to see if there's anything you can do. It seems like the drums are out of beat to me, but I'm not sure. It just doesn't sound 100%. K
----------- Answer: ( Note: The file in question is MIDIMart's "Only to Be With You -Roachford)
Hi K, This is the easiest 'fix' I've had in a long time! LOL The drums are perfectly correct. This tune is in syncopated time with the bass and other instruments anticipating the timing of the "one" beat. (One beat as in 1,2,3,4 in 4/4 time) In other words, these instruments, in certain places, are playing exactly one 1/8 note ahead of the beat deliberately to give it a syncopated feel. This is actually one of my favorite rhythms in music! I absolutely love syncopation. I used to drive the musicians in many of the top 40 bands I've performed in by playing the tambourine off the beat to give this exact feel! If you have the original by Roachford take another listen to it and forensically pick it apart. Do your best to completely ignore the vocals. Focus in and pay attention to the drums and the bass only. Then play the MIDI file again. You will hear that Glenn recreated the syncopation is exactly in the MIDI file. He did a beautiful job on this file! Cat >^..^<
