Hi Everyone I had started a thread on whether it is illegal to sing cover versions at gigs. From the responses I note that we actually need some sort of permit to do so, but the whole system is quite impotent so everyone just doesnt bother. I learnt that if we change the tune or melody just a bit or change the lyrics a wee bit, then the copyright is not valid. In other words, the copyright is not valid and will not be enforceable if we modify the song. Is this true ?? We as musicians and singers play around quite a bit with the cover songs anyway and most of us add our own "feel" to the songs that we sing.

but the whole system is quite impotent so everyone just doesnt bother. I'm thinking that you may be misunderstanding.... The responsibility has now shifted from the Performer to the club owner. look at it like a license.... if a Pub owner doesn't have a license to sell alcohol..and he does sell it... He's in trouble.... If the Pub owner does not have a license to have performances of cover music... Live or Recorded (its the same license ) and he has a band perform or plays CD's in a DJ booth... He's in trouble.... Our responsibility as a muso is to make sure we are performing in a club that has this license... Most do... there are some that don't... I'm not sure how you would go about finding out... the people who issue alcohol licenses to these places would surly know. Hope this helps... and ....... Relax man.... everything is gonna be ok... No sweat Bud...sorry if I came off harsh.... But you make a good point... things are so different now and it seems the Muso is the one that pay's for it. here's a question.... How many are making the same money as they did 20 years ago at a club... Heck.. some of us would love to be making the same amount... People don't seem to support the live music anymore... its a shame really.

Actually, I think we are earning more than we did 20 years ago - atlest over here. Yes I had a band then so the money had to be shared by five. Agreed, the money, 20 years ago, went a lonn way, but it still wasnt much. Nowadays, as a Duo, we are more than comfortable I must say and as we bought our own sound system, whatever money we earn is shared by the two of us. I guess you cant really call us a LIVE band, but we DO sing and we Do play our keyboards (along with Midis or the accompaniments) How is there, where you are ?
