For the past few years I have been running my guitar through a multi effects peddle and directly into the mains with the backing tracks and vocals. I have recently purchased an amp and will be going back to leaving my guitar out of the mains. I am curious though how you all perform. Do you play your instrument through the mains or a separate amp?

I run my Guitar into a BOSS ME50 and then into a Fender Super-Sonic guitar amp, I much prefer using an amp.

I've used many different set-ups over the years.Quadraverb GT,Pod ,Boss Me 30. straight through the PA .They are all good units and very transportable, but because i'm in a resident job now, i'm back using the fender twin reverb. All these efx units are good at what they do and if you're playing different venues every night they are ideal, mainly because they take up little room and are easy to use and you don't have to heave a combo amp around. IMO you can't beat the sound of a tube amp. Mine is DI'd through the PA as well, but you can hang a mic.in front if you want.

I, too, run thru a Boss ME50, and then into (2) yamaha amps for the stereo sound I so crave. I have tried running just direct into the PA but the sound is so sterile. I have always preferred running the guitar thru an amp, and then miking it if I need to have more presence in the overall mix to balance out with the midi files. It's more equipment to haul all around, but the sound is so much more pleasing (at least to my ears) and that helps to inspire my playing. When my guitar sound suffers, it's very distracting to me and consequently hinders me from playing like I want. I know there are D.I. boxes that are very sympathetic to guitar sounds, but for my money, it's amp all the way.

I too use a Twin Reverb, fed via a Zoom G9 multi-fx, as I like to hear and control the depth of sound that is produced. I have tried running through the pa, but unless you use monitors, I find it difficult to assess a good balance.

G'day 860tombarry, personally I always mic the amp regardless of room size and numbers, I would use a shure 57 placed very close to the cabinet and directed outward slightly and at the edge of the cone [just my preference for tone]. If your vocals are at 0db then around -5db for the guitar should be good. Also I just face the amp to suit my needs for fold back so usually a bit side on and not too loud. I mic up because it helps fill the room evenly and the mix "comes together" in the FOH speakers much better.

One way I used was guitar into processor. That into the desk.Out of desk via monitor into guitar amp.The advantage of which was that the FOH could be balanced and then your amp could be fiddled with to your hearts content without upsetting FOH and visa versa!!!
