Some of you may be aware that we will soon be moving into our new house in the country, actually this won't happen for about six weeks, but may be sooner if the weather holds up Anyway, the place we're moving to is out in the countryside and we were informed when we bought the place that broadband was not available there, at least not via a telephone line. Well, as luck would have it we have just found out that the exchange for our new area has been upgraded and is now fully BB ready! This really is good news for us because we thought we were going to have to return to a dial-up connection again. I remember those terrible days from before when if some one sent me a photo or an MP3 they would take forever to download. Well, this got me thinking: which of our members have Broadband or dial up?

Broadband for me Glenn. But as usual it's advertised as up to 8mbs yet the most I can receive is 960kbs. I've tried to find out if the lines to the exchange are to be upgraded, but good old BT close ranks and can't/won't tell me. Even so, it's better than those days when you had to wait for the modem to stop screamin' and waiting ten minutes for Google to load.

In NZ I had to turn the generator handle on my phone and ask the operator for a land line internet link. Just kidding.

Would you believe both? Ever heard of "a belt and braces"?
When I arrived here we were so far out in the sticks that no bb was available. But I could get an ISDN line. ISDN is quite cheap here in Germany. When DSL lite became available (400kbps) I applied but they said "no can do 'cos you got ISDN and that uses some of the line frequency that we need for DSL". But they could supply my neighbour upstairs. I live in a block of flats. So he got DSL lite (now upgraded to higher speed) and we have WLAN router that allows me to share the link. (with high security). But my connection is dial up.
It could be simpler! JohnG.

That is an amazing story, John. But I imagine this sort of thing is replicated throughout Europe in one form or another. I suppose eventually everybody will have a level playing field where BB is available to all, but by then we'll probably be onto a different sort of Internet connection. The following link suggests it is here even now! Internet and Broadband News
