Yep, I'd echo that 50s, the Sydney Clubs seem very much the same since the ban. Some are actually busier. One of the main differences from what's happening with our UK cousins is that most of the Clubs here had plenty of time (and space) to organise outside areas for the smokers. Some of the outdoor smoking areas are quite spectacular and will be great for a chat and a beer in the warmer weather. For those that are experiencing downturns, I hope it gets better with time. Cheers, Dave

Our smoking ban (Sydney, Australia) came in July 1, and from the venues I have worked at I have not noticed much difference, although some staff at various club have advised of a slight down turn in numbers Expect that to change in due course. Weego, sorry to learn about how you lost you're loved ones, my own father suffered a similar faith. But rest assured future generations will benefit from all these changes and I guess this will make it all worth while. Our kids, grand kids and so on will be far healthier as a result of these measures.

No smoking has been in New Zealand clubs for a few years now. Initially a lot of punters stayed away out of spite. A few clubs had designated smoking areas and pulled punters from the "un-organised" clubs. Now most clubs have these areas punters are returning pluss the folks that hated smoked filled clubs. So wait for a couple of years and it will all settle down. Remember a good act will always pull a crowd. Wait till they ban drinking in clubs !

Years ago it was common practice to drive down to your local or even further afield, get tanked up and attempt to weave home. Now, that's no way acceptable and anybody who does is considered some kind of lunatic. In a few years our next generations won't believe that people actually smoked at social gatherings or in clubs and pubs. Just as we find the Victorian notion of Opium Dens a little strange. Jez, imagine a place where you could go and smoke dope, legally. Laughable now.

On Richard and Judy yesterday they were talking about the ban, as it was the 1 month monthiversary. A landlord was on who said he's done his homework, and he said that in Ireland, since the smoking ban (don't know when it started over there) 1400 pubs have closed down and apparently, this equates to 6000 pubs in England as the ban really starts to bite. I don't know about Scotland and Wales. Now, I don't know if these figures can be believed, but if they are true, that's a lot more people on the dole - landlords who've given up and thrown in the towel, bar staff, cooks (if the pub did food), musicians who are down on their bookings etc. The landlord on R&J said that he thought better air filtration systems would have been a better alternative. Who knows? As I've already said previously, the lifeblood of Blackpool, where I live is tourism. Apparently bookings are down quite a lot in some hotels and guesthouses (although that could be summat to do with the weather, admittedly), so where does all this end? Is our beloved govt trying to bankrupt the country? If they really wanted us not to smoke, they would ban tobacco, as has already been mentioned in several posts. Ipso fatso, they don't want us to stop (I am a non smoker and always have been) but they won't do that...too much money at stake. Again, as I have stated previously, what sends me into a rage is the fact that the govt makes these rules and then retires to the bar in parliament where these same rules DO NOT APPLY!!!!! Finally, have worked to diners many times and I can assure you it is sooo boring playing so called dinner music, although if it pays the bills...? Needs must, I suppose. I'm glad I got off the treadmill. My twopenn'orth over and done with. Regards everyone Bri

Bri, just to point out pubs were closing in Ireland and elsewhere long before the ban, some are simply using the smoking ban to excuse their poor landlord-ship (is that a word?).
Admittedly some will close as a result of loss of profits but this isn't always going to be because of the ban. That pub man you mentioned is naturally going to use figures which apparently support his views.
JimmyG, in his post above, has illustrated perfectly how we will feel about this in time to come.

Landlord-ship? As much a word as monthiversary. Yep, I do agree with you. What I do not support is the governments attitude of "Do as we say, not as we do." Hypocrites all. Regards Bri
