Hi Everyone Had the most horrible week, my Hard Drive just died on me, taking with it tons of my long collected music, midis, photos, emails the lot. I had some stuff backed up, but not as much as as should have, you always mean to get round to these things and never do.I've lost loads of things I doubt I'll ever replace. So Take a Tip Guys, Back Up, Back, Up Back Up It always happens when you least expect it to. I've been depressed all week, so be warned!! Back up now not tomorrow. Jacqui

Jacquie, I have been there and my heart bleeds for you.
If you have any kind of a list of what you lost we will all try and help you get them back.
I have also learned the hard way the importance of backing everything up. I now do this religiously everytime I do any changes or add any new files.
I hope your message gets across to other members and that everyone makes regular, daily back ups.

Thanks for that Emerald. As you know I'm off to Kerry Ireland tomorrow, so I won't have time to sort anything out now till next week, even putting all the windows, software, printers, Internet etc, takes time, that's all I've done so far. Hopefully when I'm back I can start the sole destroying job of trying to replace some of my lost stuff. Hope you all have a good week Take Care All Jacqui

I recently had a problem with my computer, (had to have Windows XP re-installed), I don't know what the problem is with your computer, but the guy who did mine for me managed to temporarily transfer all my stuff to another hard drive then transfer it back after. (Tip: don't go to PC World, it will cost a fortune). If you have no joy with that, I'd be happy to help replace some of your lost files, if I can.

Have a good, safe trip Jacqui and if you are passing through Tipperary pop in for a cuppa. Ziggy, what a gent you are. I'm sure if we all come together we will be able to get Jacqui sorted out. That's one of the best thing for me about this forum - the way members will step in to help each other out.

Hi - Don't know how old your computer is or which operating system you are (were?) running at the time of the crash but I have only had one situation where data was not recoverable (lightning struck the client's server!). With the price of Hard Drives being so cheap, the best method is to add something like a 40Gb hard-drive purely for backups. Then set up the windows Backup utility to perform a regular backup of the system and data to this second drive. Alternatively, if the board runs RAID, then set up a Mirror. This literally mirrors the data 'invisibly' - so if you have a 100Gb main drive, you need to have a second 100Gb drive and then set up the system to RAID 1 (more info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redundant_array_of_independent_disks#RAID_1. There are software RAID utilities, but the hardware one is the best for reliability. If you are running XP and on broadband, you can send me a remote assistance email and I can take a look at it if the system is still intact OR if you replaced the hardrive and can put the failed one in as a slave?? Hi Everyone Thanks for all you lovely kind messages, your a great crowd. I've now had a new hard drive fitted, and the repair shop said they normally can restore data from the Old Hard Drive, but they needed the exact same type of Hard Drive to match it with mine then it might be possible(Something to do with the controller?) It's Western Digital 1200JB, but apparently Western Digital do loads of different models and it has to be matched with the exact same model which they don't have in at the moment. Most of the important stuff was Pictures, all my emails, lots of pro midi files from Bandtrax, Ray Doyle, Midi Magic & Simply Sound, lots of country, Irish and 50's & 60's music. But at least MidMarts still here so thats a blessing Jacqui

Yes jacqui.
We plan to go nowhere and hopefully be here forever.
Download all you want jacqui, I remember when mine went a few weeks ago, but fortunately, I had 2 backups. One on an external 80gb hard drive and another on dvd/cd. I still had ALL my files and photo's of the family and friends still intact. But my problem was transferring everything how I wanted it on the new hard drive. Just took time, best of luck jacqui, good to hear you are still there. X

Jacqui, great to have you back. Delighted to hear your trip to Ireland was a good one. You are right the weather here is pretty lovely but there is a slight change in the air as I type, getting a bit chilly in fact. I was just listening today about the Puck fair on the radio. Seems it was a huge success this year, but then again, it always is Hard-drive nightmares are the reason I now back up EVERYTHING! Sorry for shouting but I had to get it off my chest. Like Glenn I also have an external hard-drive which I copy stuff to each and every time I do anything significant - which tends to be practically everyday
