Hi all,
Some people have asked me how I do URL links that look neat and tidy (like this) instead of ugly (like this: www.google.com). The ugly URLs are easier because you don't have to add any BBcode markup to them - you just enter a URL in and the forum software converts it into a clickable link automatically - similar to the way Outlook Express does it.
If "BBcode" and "markup" are "Huh?" to you... I'm talking about what lets you bold, underline, italicise, and link stuff.
The syntactically proper way of doing this - that is, without the forum software doing its conversion - is to enter (note I've placed a space in the commands so they're not converted):
giving
www.something.here.com/directory/directory/file.ext[/ul]To make it pretty, you simply do this:
giving
insert witty quote[/ul]If you're familiar with HTML, I'm simply making the URL an attribute of the tag, and replacing the marked-up area with other text.
Note that some forums are different in the way they handle BBcode. Some require double-quotes around the URL (viz. blah) and others (like this one and TFM, IIRC) don't. Others still will let you do HTML instead of BBcode (e.g. <a href="http: //blah...">stuff</a>) - but whatever floats your boat.
