He was a gentleman to say the least Pat and i had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, one of the many talents to come from the midlands of Ireland, he is being buried in his hometown of Mullingar on Saturday.
God Bless Joe.

He was that. I last met him March of this year when we were going to England. We were waiting together to board the boat, we and the kids were parked right beside him for about an hour before we finally drove on board and in all that time he was terrific not only with us but the children as well, posed for photos and everything. I will post some of them on this thread later.
I will be going to the funeral.

What a really sad time this is for entertainers not only in this country but worldwide Joe Dolan was 1 of life`s true gentlemen not many can claim to be a legend in his own lifetime but Joe Dolan most certainly was,his live shows were just brilliant and a lot of us entertainers owe him a huge debt of gratitude, how many of us still sing his songs or are asked to do his songs He leaves behind a massive void in our business. The no. of times I've backed cabaret acts doing "Good Looking Woman" and "Make Me an Island" I think is uncountable. A great star, will be sadly missed, but as has been already observed, his music will continue for a great many years to come, I'm sure.

I had the privilege of working with Joe on several occasions over the years. He was always the quintessential perfect gentleman, Unlike some I could mention, Joe always considered himself part of a band, he was never big headed about himself. Joe did a lot of charity work behind the scenes and often combined his love of golf with some good cause or other and with that "ear to ear" smile, it was hard to say no to Joe lol. My heart felt condolences to his brother Ben and all his family and friends Larry.

I found this lovely tibute.
Joe Dolan Dies From Brain Hemorrhage By SHAWN POGATCHNIK – 2 days ago
DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) — Joe Dolan, one of Ireland's first pop music stars who entertained audiences for decades with Vegas-style showmanship, has died from a brain hemorrhage, his family announced. He was 68.
Dolan collapsed at his family home in suburban south Dublin on Christmas night and died Wednesday after falling into a coma at a hospital.
He was the most celebrated — and fondly caricatured — survivor of Ireland's bygone "showband" era of the 1960s and 1970s, when homegrown rock 'n' roll acts toured the country playing cover versions of international hits.
His biggest hit in 1969, "Make Me an Island," reached No. 3 in Britain and No. 1 in 14 other countries. Other hits that climbed the European charts included "You're Such a Good-Looking Woman" in 1970, "Lady in Blue" in 1975 and "I Need You" in 1977.
His last Irish No. 1 came in 1997, when he re-recorded "Good-Looking Woman" with a popular fictional TV comedian, a puppet named Dustin the Turkey.
"He was a fantastic showman, had great stage presence, had a distinctive singing voice and never forgot his roots," said Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.
Dolan, with a bushy brow and beaming smile, was known for the power and quality of a voice that fell somewhere between Tom Jones and Tony Bennett. Unlike other showband stars, he found success overseas with original material.
He had an irreverent sense of humor, most recently demonstrated when he underwent a hip replacement operation in 2005 — and had his original hip bone sold for charity on eBay.
In recent years, Dolan kept touring and recording regularly, and was in the middle of a concert series in Dublin in November when he left the stage after just four songs, suffering from exhaustion. He canceled a planned Christmas tour.
Dolan, a lifelong bachelor, was survived by his brother Ben — who performed with him in his original 1960s showband, The Drifters — his other brothers Paddy and Vincent, and his sisters Dympna and Imelda.

Although we have known each other since the late 70s I never actually got to gig with him on stage proper, the closet was playing with a relief band in the Premier Hall in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, before his band came on. Despite the fact we were using their PA his band made us sound very thinny when they took over

Rest in peace Joe weegeo I still do a lot of his songs in my regular gig shows, the only time I don't do any is when I do the Elvis show. But now that I think of it Joe did a wonderful recording of Suspicious Minds, at least I think he did, he certainly did in his live shows in the 90s. Anyway, so when I do my EP show tomorrow night I will mention about Joe and this song. Joe definitely did a terrific version of My Way back in the late 60s, which he did actually record.

sorry guys, but i have to comment on this.
I am fortunate to be in a position where i know the dolan family personally, and gig with 2 members of Joes band on a regular basis, a little 3 piece called "Cover Story" which consists of myself (Guitar) Ray Dolan (Drums) and Adrian Dolan (Bass).
Joe, was always a gentleman, always smiling, and a warm soul and very humurous man to be around, a keen golfer, and a very charitable man.
he will be sadly missed by all his fans, yet i am sure that as musicians, we can keep his memory living on by performing his songs, and passing his music onto younger generations.
He will be sadly missed.

You are very welcome to post your comments Paul and we appreciate you doing so. Joe was a true gent, that's for sure. As I said before we met up with him last March at Dublin Ferry Port when we were on our way to London, Joe was off to Cheltenham Races where he was gigging. Here's one of the photos that was taken that morning.

Strangely enough I was going home for a few days & had just got off the plane at Dublin Airport when I got a text saying that Joe needed prayers & was desperately ill. Within the hour a second text informed me of his passing......stunned. Although he had been in & out of hospital over the last few weeks he was confident of making a full recovery & getting back on the road. Alas, none of us know what is planned for us in the great scheme of things but suffice to say Joe's legacy will be with us for many many years to come. Deepest condolences to Ben & Helen, Adrian, Ray & the Dolan family. A fitting, dignified & emotional send off from the "people of Mullingar" was only to be expected. R.I.P.
ps. There are some very nice Bebo tribute sites if anyone is interested.
