Just heard of the passing of Tommy Makem, aged 74, the Irish singer who sang with the Clancy Brothers Folk group from the 1960's onward. I was never a great folk fan but the group was synonymous with folk music back then and were famous for wearing the thick Arran knit woolly jumpers on stage. They had some fame in the USA too, and that's where Tommy died.
I bought a couple of their old EP's last week from 1962 and on one of them is I'll Tell Me Ma which has become popular again.
I'm sure many of our Irish members will be sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Tommy!!

I heard this yesterday on the news back here. Very sad. He was an extremely popular musician and singer, not just with the public but also with the likes of Roger Daltry and Bob Dylann. In fact he once shared a room with Dylan and the rwo were great friends.
RIP.

He made folk music what it is today and was also a fine poet.
R.I.P. Tommy.

A fine ambassador for Irish music & song, whatever your musical persuasion.
May he rest in peace
