Dermot O'Brien, the Irish accordionist and singer, died May 22 after a battle with cancer, in Ardee, a town in County Louth in Ireland. He was 74 He wrote Dublin Town In 1962 , had a big hit with 'The Merry Ploughboy' and was the only man ever to win two all Ireland medals in the same day, one for playing the accordion , and one for playing football for Louth. Dermot had a mighty impact on the folk/ballad scene in Ireland from the 60s. Rest in peace Dermot. [turfman from Ardee]

I spent a weekend in Dermot's company in 1978 at the All Ireland Accordion Championships in Ardee Co Louth, Dermot, Ivor Baynon, and Myself were Judges, I worked for Hohner as a demonstrator at the time, These were the days long before midi and if you needed to hear what an instrument could do you went to a demo night. He was a very kind and funny man and a fine musician. May he rest in Peace.

Very sad to hear that, my father who also passed away in january liked his music, as he also was a gifted accordian player.
May he rest in peace.

R.I.P Dermott O' Brien, Such a great instrument to play. He made it look easy. I loved to play the button key myself.
