Can anyone help me figure out why I can't transfer midi mart files to a Smart Media card or USB thumb drive? I've unzipped them to load just the midi data, but it (windows XP) tells me "The directory or file cannot be created" when I try to transfer them to SM or USB thumb drive ... for loading into my Yamaha.I can do this with other non midi mart files. Hummm ... what am I missing Thanks, art

Are you trying to load them from the actual zip folder? Try using "extract all" (right click on zip folder) and create a new unzipped folder before you try to transfer the files to your thumb drive. Cheers, Dave.

here's what I've done. I downloaded some files while visiting Florida (and enjoying the wonders of broadband) then saved them to CD to bring home. Once home I loaded them to a file on my desktop. Then unzipped them. Then tried to load the unzipped files to SM and USB thumb drive and got the "directory or file cannot be created" message. In the meantime I've read your Midi licence post where it says you can only have one copy per device that use the software. Have I exceded this I wonder? thanks, art

Sounds like a card problem to me. Damaged? Full? Write-protect sticker on it?
Can you copy other files onto it? Can you copy these files onto another card? Do you have a different card reader/writer?
Is the card preformatted, perchance for some really old version of Windows that doesn't understand long file names?
No insult intended by the obvious questions, but sometimes they're the ones that get the problem solved.

Thanks Stephanie for your input. The SM card and the thumb drive are both formatted for my Yamaha XS. But a SMF should be able to transfer to them ... in fact I've done this a lot except for the last ones from midimart ... which were downloaded to computer ... then loaded to CD ... then brought home and loaded to my computer to unzip ... then they failed to load on to SM or thumb drive ... so I was wondering if midimart had some magic to where once you downloaded a file you couldn't copy it more than once? does this explanation make any sense ? har! best, art

Maybe you're out of space on the memory card?
I have no problems writing to and reading from both SmartMedia and SD cards.
Can you create the folder manually - use Windows Explorer and create a new folder? Then try to copy the file individually into it? Just a thought.
If not, then there is something definitely wrong, because this works fine on all my computers (at home and at work).
The only other thing I can think of is if the card was formatted on the Yamaha, while it should work on the PC, maybe there is some problem or limitation there. I would try to back up what's on the card to the computer and then maybe reformat the card and see if it works after that.
