Let me introduce our newest member:
First, the basics: Chris hails from the midwest (US that is), he's, ah, what we could charitably call late middleage, a semi-retired flim flam man whose always looking for a way to make a buck, but is always hoping he can make a living via writing (checkout http://www.northerncrossonline.com).
Chris taught himself to play the guitar many years ago and even played in a bar cover band in the early 70's, but, alas, real life called and his cherry red Gibson 335 was relegated to a corner where it collected dust for three decades. Then, during a visit with an old bandmate who lives in Phoenix, he was obliged to pick up a guitar and jam. Although it was apparent that his hands had turned into hoofs, the experience was so much fun that when he returned home he was inspired to blow the dust off his old 335 and start banging out 60's Stones tunes once again.
Chris is now what we call in the biz, a closet guitartist ... one of those guys who's much too talentless and, ergo, too nervous to ever play in front of people again, but who enjoys the hell out it anyway. But playing alone gets, well, lonely, so he bought a Fender G-Dec 30 and now he has an entire band with him in his closet ... great guys who never tire playing the same riff over and over again and, more importantly, never judge.
Now the G-Dec is fun, but somewhat limited ... to fully enjoy it, Chris was forced to enter the dark world of midi. Remember, he's a middleaged guy who can plug a 335 into his Fender Twin, and can turn on a computer ... but that's about it. This whole midi thing made his head hurt, but, amazingly he learned how to load midi files into his G-Dec ... it wasn't easy and it wasn't pretty, but he did it and now the funs-a-poppin'.
Of course, now he craves more midi files and wants to learn how to minipulate them, e.g. add or subtrack tracks, but the latest problem is trying tame his Cakewalk Music Creator 3 ... an ornry critter that seems to only capable of converting his format 1 midi files into format 0 midi files ... the required format for the G-Dec (you don't want to know how he figured that out ... the air that wafted up from his little basement music closet was so blue that his poor wife thought he had developed a severe case of Turrets).
So, there you have it. Chris, a poor, but erstwhile guitar hack is happily rocking to his home made version of Guitar Hero. But he is always looking for ways to enhance his experience. If anyone out there in midi land has any midi and/or Cakewalk (the stupid thing refuses to create audible sounds) tips or helpful info, please don't hesitate to pass it on!
