Hello all
I am a solo artist and have been for 15 years or so. I use midi files in Sonar sequencer that is linked up to sampled sounds. I then mic them down to wav, and then add backing vocal in Adobe Audition. This is then all mixed to an mp3 and played on a laptop through my PA which I sing and guitar to.

Hi Iron baden
took me a long time and a lot of trial and error to get the sample sounds working. It seems some forums regarding this subject are so snotty and really don't want to help Newbies, that really bugs me.
I use Sonar as my main midi editing tool. I then add VSTs which are sample packages that are add-ons to Sonar or any decent editing tool. I have the following VSTs which seem to cover all my needs for a great sound Native Instruments Bandstand - this has all the standard midi instruments but of much better quality EZ Drummer - a very easy to use drum kit with some really wicked samples. Well worth a look. Eiderol Orchestra - some very nice strings and brass sounds. Although I think this product is discontinued it can still be obtained.
Some very basic steps for using samples and VSTs Step 1. Open your midi file in the editor Step 2. Load the VSTs you want to use Step 3. Assign each midi channel to the relevant VST channel Step 4. Press play and be amazed at the quality.
There may be a couple of other little things to do, but basically that is it. Contact me if you want more detail. nickstmoritz@hotmail.com or reply on this post and I will do my best to answer any questions.
I then mix this down to a wav and then add backing vocals in Adobe Audition multitrack putting my voice through a Midi Vocalizer so I can get some cool harmonies.
This system works extremely well for me and the sounds are great (well I think so!!)
Best of luck. Nick
