My Great Grandfather was born in Port Arthur in the 1880's. Is that close enough? We're pretty proud of that ( Major Penal colony for those who don't know Tassie ) Angela steele

Tasmania... Australian State
The Island just south of Australia. Favorite spot to send errant englishmen (Pommies) in the 1800's. Beautiful Island, Nasty penal colony.
Tracing your family back to Tazzy is the equivilent of Americans tracing their families back to the "Mayflower" only way cooler. There are passenger (convict) lists on the net
My Grandfather was born in Tassy in 1883. His father was born in Melbourne and his mother was an Aboriginal housemaid. Tales my Grandfather told when I was a boy are the stuff of legends. He jumped ship, settling in New Zealand around 1900. Buy me a beer or two and I'll tell you some more.
ps.my FATHER celebrates his 100th birthday on the 14th Jan.

Thanks guys and gals, but it seems like I'm gonna have to be the only one "down" downunder. I hope I can live up to your expectations. P.S. Tassie a part of New Zealand....that'd put a dent in our heritage lol

Hi there nyxan and welcome.......there are a few of us from the north island but none from the south island apart from you. A great state Tasmania and some great muso's have come from down down under. I toured there in the 80's for 2 weeks from Bridport and Devonport down to Hobart and across to Queenstown etc. Very enjoyable.
Enjoy Midimart.

Welcome nyxan! My daughter just spent about 6 months in Queenstown & loved it. She's now on the North Island in Tairua bracing for the the holiday crowd.

G'day, I was born and raised in Hobart and left school to play guitar in pubs in the 80's. Left the state in 1985 - returned in 1991 for a couple of years and have been back on the "mainland" for ten years now. Still playing.
Regards - Rod
