Last weekend we played a gig in Troy, Alabama for a cancer benefit. The person who contacted us about the gig requested a song I had never heard...."Something You Got" by Chris Kenner. I found the MP3 file, but never found any midi files, and I looked everywhere. I was getting nervous because I was running out of time, and this person really wanted this tune played at the benefit. So, I started hunting midi files that might lend itself to adaption, enough anyway to end up sounding close to the tune requested. Lo and behold...I found one. "Put your hand in the hand of the man" was the midi I adapted. I slowed the tempo down, beefed up the drums, and muted the lead vocal. I rehearsed it, got comfortable with it, compared my modified midi to the MP3, and eventually played the modified midi and sang the words to the song "Something You Got". It was a big success, and we got a pretty good tip to boot. Was wondering if anybody out there has had similar experiences. Let me know!

It's not quite the same but a similar sort of thing happened to me about two years ago. I was looking for a particular midi (I can't remember what it was called) for a song I was to do at a wedding for a friend but couldn't find it anywhere at the time. Then one day while checking out a German site with loads of free German midi files I heard a midi that sounded very similar to what I was after! It worked a treat

Did the same for the old Fats Dominoe song "Sick & Tired" I knew a Midi would be impossible to find but a slowed down version of Little Richards "Lucille" fit the bill nicely

When you think about it there are hundreds, if not thousands of tunes utilixing the same chord progressions. You have your I IV V7 progression... as a matter of fact there was a song book with 1001 three chord tunes that all were I IV V7 ! Then you have chord progressions that follow the circle of 5ths, and you have IV II V I progressions and linear progressions too. It's no wonder you can find other tunes that will suffice as a replacement for one's you don't have LOL

True...true...chord progressions in different songs can be very similar and to that I might also add in sequence, meaning changes occur when they're supposed to. My problem was I had to find not only the same progressions but also over a drum pattern that kept the feel of the original tune. Ironically, that is where I spent most of my time...trying to find the correct beat to capture the feel of the song. I'm not much of a programmer, and in this particular instance...did not have time to create another drum pattern to fit the song. I just had to find a similar midi file...tweak out the tempo and go!
