Hi Some of you will recall some discussions some months ago about the fact that Roland VSC crashes when it strikes certain midi files it doesn't like - at the time some members identified that the problem was caused by sysex messages or aftertouch messages and that if you removed them from the midi files Roland VSC would play happily ever after. I for one have been very frustrated by this ( experienced numerous crashes) and was hoping that Roland would someday bring out an updated driver or some other fix to solve the problem. At the risk of flogging a dead horse I was talking to a guy in a local music shop today and happened to mention that problem to him. He straightaway rang a technical guy in Roland he knew and asked him about it. The reply was essentially - Roland agree it is a known problem but to fix it they would have to rewrite the entire programme and as it is not what they call a "high end" product they can't justify doing it and therefore there will be no fix. They added that if the sysex message is genuine General Midi then VSC will accept it but if it is any other variation it will crash. Not a lot of help I guess but at least now I will stop trying to look for updates on the Roland website etc. cheers Roy Setchfield Waiuku New Zealand

Thanks for the update Roy. I'd like to add that I never had a problem with VSC on Windows 98, just on the XP. I always had a feeling that Roland must have known about this glitch but just ignored it.
Cheers.

Here's a possible work around..... I had this problem and what i did was right click on the file and rename it... sounds wierd but it seems to work for example.... If the file name is Wonderful tonight... Right click and choose rename... call it wonderful and press enter... try to reopen the file. it seems to work for me. ;D

Maybe it's luck or maybe it's something else but I've never had a problem with VSC with or without the sysex or aftertouch messages. Hard to see why aftertouch would cause a problem because they're either recognised or, if not, they're ignored.

I think i may have been the first person to be affected by V.S.C. crashing 'years ago' and I went everywhere for help and tried everything and nobody, including Roland could help me.
Until a Midimart member (A.J.) got involved and she told me to delete the Sysex files, and from then on I have NEVER had a crash.
When I looked at the problem files that were crashing, they were all loaded with Sysex files. I spoke to Roland in America and Australia and nobody knew (or wanted to know) of the problem, and this problem went on for years.
I was even prepared to delete the whole program but I couldn't find another program that did what VSC did, so I had to put up with my computer continually crashing.
But everything is fine now, thank god

Another input.....I only had the problem of hanging notes with the VSC canvas and only when using the Van basco midi player. The problem was cured when aftertouch data was removed. The problem never occured if I ran the file through say Cakewalk or Media player.

I have a Yamaha XG Soundcard, but have thought about getting Roland VSC to give me more flexibility. Is there somewhere that I can download a trial version?

Hi Ziggy, give the edirol site a visit. I'm not sure of a demo download, but all info regarding the VSC and corresponding downloads are available from there.
