Having a problem and hoping someone may be able to help me out here. I have an ipod, and in order to use that you have to have apple itunes software installed on your PC, but to run itunes you also have to have Quick Time installed, it does this automatically, anyway I've noticed that now when I go to any sites like oneoffmidi, bandtrax or any site to listen to a midi, music file demo nothing happens, they just won't load or play, I also had a file Jazzcat sent me from a Ripway storage account, which I could not get to play or load, if I uninstall Quicktime, everything works OK, but itunes appears to need it to operate, and without it I can't access my ipod, but then as soon as I install it again it stops everything else working. I've tried unselecting any audio settings in Quick Time, even tried unselecting everything, but still no luck. I'm just wondering if any of you have had a similar problem or have any ideas I can try Jacqui

Hi Jacqui
Try right clicking on the midi file and then select "open with" and then select your usual midi file player, ie media player. Although midi files should play okay using quick time.......
Cheers John

Hi Guys If I open I file on my PC, it opens in the default player I have designated, but when I try and listen to anything on a web page, when I click to listen to any demo or be it midi or MP3 nothing happens, the screen just goes blank, if I download & save it, then play it will play as normal, but on the file Cat sent me, I could not even download it, because it would not bring up the link, think I might have to send an email to itunes, but I have heard they are not helpful when it comes to custumer support Do any of you have itunes installed yourself? Jacqui

Ho jacqui I have iTunes installed for my ipod and Cakewalk for midi. I think your problem is related to "associations", in other words, which programs open certain files or applications. You can check what associations and programs work together by opening up "my Computer" and going to "Tools", "Folder Options", "File Types". From there you can check which application opens which files and, if necessary, change that association/program.
Hope this makes sense and is of some help.

Hi Al I've had a look at your suggestion and Mid, Midi & Kar files are all set to open with Vanbasco midi player, I don't know what other ones I should check. Hi Steve I'm glad someone understands my problem, but you would think there must be a solution to this one, by the way how do you get music onto your ipod now? Jacqui

Hi Jacqui, Just one other thing to consider; sometimes your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc) will over-ride your system settings and choose a different default player. When you loaded i-tunes it probably changed your browser settings. You can re-set it to Vanbasco in the setup options of the browser. If you have any trouble correcting it let me know which browser you use and I'll help you with it. Cheers, Dave.

That's OK Jacqui, your Browser (the program you use to browse the internet) is Internet Explorer. What I was getting at is that your browser settings can over-ride the default system settings and that when you loaded i-tunes it probably changed the way your browser handles media files. I use Firefox myself and it's very easy to set up file associations where you tell the browser what to do with each file type, ie: open midi and kar files with vanbasco, play movies in Media Player etc. I'll have a look at Internet Explorer and figure out how to do it there in the next little while. (I'm assuming from your original post that you want midi and kar to open in vanBasco). One thing you can try in the meantime (which should actually fix the problem for you) is to look at the file types in the options menu of the Quicktime player you have installed and uncheck mid, midi, and kar. This will make your browser look for the default settings which you have set to vanbasco. BUT, double check that your vanbasco player is setup to do this; open vb > click on options >setup > then select the misc (miscellaneous) tab and make sure that you have .mid .midi .kar and .rmi selected as file types and also check the box to register filetypes on program start up. I understand that it might seem complicated but, once you get the hang of it, it's all pretty simple... sort of! lol I'll get back to you after I've had a play with Internet Explorer. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Jacqui, Still trying to suss that out in Internet Explorer. I don't suppose you'd consider making the leap to Firefox for your web-browsing? lol It seems to be a common enough problem with i-tunes/quicktime and there are a few threads about it on the web. Did you try my suggestion? ie: One thing you can try in the meantime (which should actually fix the problem for you) is to look at the file types in the options menu of the Quicktime player you have installed and uncheck mid, midi, and kar. If you can't seem to modify the Quicktime plug-in settings just do the vanBasco steps and it may over-ride the Quicktime plug-in anyway. I don't have i-tunes loaded but it seems to me that the steps above should fix any problem. Try the solution I gave and I'll keep working on it until we have it fixed. Cheers, Dave.

Hello again Dave Well I've tried all you suggested, I had actually done that before, in the quicktime settings, but I had not checked the Vanbasco player, but now I have and all the settingswere as they should be and still no joy. I found tonight I could not even get any demo's to play here on MM, on the members stage, so I've uninstalled quicktime again just for now, and as soon as I do, everything works OK again, except I can't use itunes or my ipod now I was wondering if I set up i tunes on another part of my PC, say as a different user with a seperate log in, and just used that part for itunes it might be a solution, seems a drastic measure, but I'm out of ideas just now. Jacqui
