Hi. I need help I'm frustrated. I have an mc50 Roland sequencer. My mc50 sequencer does not accept the midi songs that I downloaded from midi mart onto a floppy disc from my computer. Is there anything special I should be doing to create a midi format for my mc50? Can you help me to resolve this problem . I would really appreciate it.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Roger.

Hi Roger,
This may be a very simple fix. It's possible (check the manual) that your mc50 only accepts MIDI files in what's called type 0 format. This is very common with hardware sequencers.
Most MIDI files here are type 1 which is the "normal" format for a software sequencer. The difference is that in type 0 (simplified) there is just one track with all the notes in it, it doesn't matter which MIDI channel the notes are for. In a type 1 file there is a track for each channel.
So, can you convert between the two types? Yes. How? Download the free program Anvil Studio, load the file you want to convert into it and then, in the file menu, "Export MIDI-format 0 file ...". Give it a new name so that you don't overwrite the original file.
Hope that works for you, let us know how you get on.
All the best, JohnG

can you format the disc on the sequencer,I use a roland soundbrush and it took me ages to realise that when i formatted a HD disc on the computer and saved a SMF to it it would not play. so what I do now is format on the soundbrush, and save as format O to it and that works for me.it never mentions any of this in the manuals.they must think we're all computer wizards and not musicians.hope this helps.

You may need to put tape on the punched out slot to save the files from your PC. I had the same prob with my Kawai Q80 sequencers. Yes you will need to format the files on your sequencer first. Also make sure you take the read only tick off in properties as you may have trouble re- saving your file.

Hey thank you guys, for such quick replies. This is Roger, Here is what is happening..... I can download to my floppy disc on my computer, with no problems but ....can you tell me how or what steps to take, to install these files on my mc50. ? I'm still confused about this step of taking it off midimart and onto my mc50. My floppies are 2 DD and they are format 1? Roger. Thanks.

Can you see the files on the floppy thru your PC ? Has the floppy been formatted by the MC50 ? When you insert the floppy into the sequencer is there any error messages ? Can you see the titles on the floppy in the sequencer? We need to work out if your files are going onto the floppy before we go to the next stage.

Yes I can see the files on the floppy thru the pc. I tried to format it on the mc50 but the pc will not accept the floppy, it asks if I want to format now, and I say yes,but it will not accept.\ Yes there is an error message on the sequencer when I insert the floppy. No I cannot see any titles on the floppy in the sequencer.
I see on the computer that the song files are successful onto the floppy because when I press on the midi file it goes onto my cakewalk program automatically. but it remains in the yellow color instead of the green audio color, and there is no audio.
I do get audio when I enter my computer and it is in jazz sequencer. but not cakewalk.
Looking forward to hear from you. Roger

I remember browsing thru one of the forums and someone mentioned about formatting the disc to 720. Does this make any sense? if it does, do you think this might be the solution? and if yes, can you walk me thru the procedure to do this. Roger

If you formatt a HD disc to 720 the sequencer will accept it okay but the PC may not, unless you cover the cut out in the bottom corner. I dont think this is your problem if you are using DD's. Try saving 2 files type 0 and type 1 and see if the sequencer can read any of them. Also I think you can only use 8 characters in the midi file name.

The disk needs to be formatted to 720 as far as I can see and yes the old (DOS) eight dot three format I suspect e.g. "filename.mid". Never thought of that. Surprising how quickly one can forget things isn't it? And, I'm almost certain, MIDI format 0. But then this is just a collection of all the suggestions that other people have offered. You should find that you can format an HD disk to DD. For those who've never tried it there's this little utility that I used to use almost all the time. It's an alternate version of the old DOS FDformat command but with many more facilities. You can format disks larger than 1.44 and put in sliding sectors. There's an extremely comprehensive explanation with it that defines all the switches. I still run it from time to time from the DOS box. Try here: www.winimage.com/othertl.htmand work your way down to FDFormat 1.8. You'll have to remember working in DOS before you can use it. I think I'll copy its location to the useful utilities section too. JohnG.
