Hi giggers How do you guys dress for a gig ? At weddings, we are suited, booted, tied and polished but for house parties and other gigs we usually wear casuals, but we never wear jeans !!! I would be interesting to know your dress codes

In my case it depends on the type of gig. Dinner/Dance functions usually mean the monkey suit gets an airing but for your everyday gig at a restaurant or pub smart casual usually works for me. I agree with you Shyam, unless you're playing with a heavy metal outfit, jeans should be out. I've started working with a band again (sacked the guitarist for those of you who saw my previous moan about unprofessionalism) and we are wondering whether to all wear the same or be more individual. What do you think?
Best regards,
Roger

Dress to suit the occasion but I think it's important to look like you belong in the band. There's nothing worse than being under-dressed at a function but just because the guests are in suits doesn't mean the band will look good in suits. At dinner dances and corporate functions I will dress to impress but never a suit (personal choice) and at regular pub gigs I'll wear today's fashion which (sorry to say guys) includes jeans and appropriate shirt. I'm talking dress jeans not everyday jeans and shoes not runners.

When I played with Renegades Rebels and Rogues we modeled our dress style on the Magnificent Seven....long coats, jeans, boots, hats and all...but when we played a private functions or dinner dances we dressed in black jeans, white grandfather shirts, black 3/4 length jackets, boots and of coarse...black stetsons.......it still looked smart and usually the crowd knew us and knew what they were getting.................boy but I miss those days

Depends where your playing and what kind of music you do!!! I like to wear casual wherever we,re playing.
Once saw a lead singer at a wedding in a tuxedo and suit singing a Motorhead song.....................!!!
Strange days indeed!!!!!

Hey Shyam,
Great topic! We dress the same way basically as everyone else...suit and tie for the formals for me...full length dress for Jacquie, the girl singer. Casual, but always color coordinated for most other gigs. We will wear dress jeans on special occassions. Younger audiences seem to appreciate it. I guess they think it makes us look younger. Boy, if they really knew how old we were, they be saying stuff like ..."wow, you're older than my dad" or "I thought old people couldn't do stuff like that" or "Can I get you a chair, you look tired." LOL Anyway, the attire always fits the gig.

YEAH, that was refreshing !! The long coats sound interesting and kinda amusing too !! By the way guys do you ever wear bow ties ? Personally I cant stand the chokers. When I wear a tie, I always unbutton the top button . The tie is well up and prim and propah !! Just cant wiggle the adam's apple comfortably to sing ! How many of you sport a protruding Adam's apple ? I dont.

Standard club attire for us is black and white. We usually wear black jeans (no holes or frayed cuffs) and white shirts. Dress-up nights we also throw on black vests which tend to come off as the night winds on.
Basically, we try to look like a band and like we all belong on the same stage. I have found that it also makes it easier for patrons to zero in on a band member (future gigs...) if they can pick out a band member easily.
We try to look nice and look like a group. I hate bands where everyone looks like they just came in from work with their grungies on. You need a little class to set yourself apart.

If the music is good enough people don,t care what your wearing!!!
Can anyone remember Bruce springsteen and the E. street band all dressed like penguins?.................................Thought not!!!
Got nothing to do with class!!!

If your playing a pub its standard dress code....oldest T shirt and jeans.

That's a funny one, my agent is very particular about the way we dress and me being a girl he likes me to wear dresses although I am far more comfortable in pants, especially on a stage! Whenever we get a pub gig I love to pull out my jeans (trendy ones of course) and just feel comfy. The main thing I think is to look smart and professional at all times

Oh yeah the dress up's are the best. We've had xmas, halloween, 70's, beach party, mardi gras, simply red. I love the costume parties, everyone's always up for a good time

We said Jacqui. Dress to impress is an old saying but it is equally valid for gigs.
It is true that certain bands can get away wearing any old thing when gigging but I try to look the part whenever possible.

Ok, but if your singing gritty classic rock songs or sad cowboy songs, the image does,nt conjure up someone dressed to the nines does it?
I think all that dressing up went out with the brat pack!!
Oh well, Horses for courses!!
Imagine oasis in suits, god forbid!!!
Look, its fine if you play show songs, or all the vegas type tunes, most of the country and irish bands tend to wear the same outfits with the lead singer cut in a better cloth and that works for them cos of the style of music most of them sing!!
Each to they,re own, but not for me unless the occasion warrented it!!!

We generally wear red and black for our gigs - nice pants and shirts for the guys, anything classy for the women. We don't have a uniform or costume per se but the colours make us all look like part of the group. For special or seasonal occasions we add sparkly jewelry or scarves. One Christmas all the guys turned up in tuxes and tails!
